HOUSTON- Melanie Lawson was honored recently by Crisis Intervention of Houston, Inc. (CIH) at its “Magic of M” gala which celebrated women answering the call of service to the community through their tireless volunteer efforts.
When the award-winning journalist isn’t busy covering the latest headlines on KTRK channel 13’s “Eyewitness News” and “Live at 5” broadcasts, she’s making a difference in her community through her commitment to the arts, health and culture.
Throughout her career, she has covered virtually every city, state and national election and has interviewed a wide range of notables, including three U.S. Presidents, the Dalai Lama, poet Maya Angelou, legendary journalist Barbara Walters, and many more. Though her career is star-studded, Melanie’s true passion lies in making a positive difference in her community. Melanie serves on the board of numerous organizations, including the Houston Ballet, S.H.A.P.E. Community Center, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Volunteer Houston and the Houston Association of Black Journalists.
She also belongs to the Houston Chapter of The Links, Incorporated; Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and the American Leadership Forum. One of Melanie’s current passions is serving as chairman of the Houston Museum of African-American Culture, set to open later this year in Houston’s Museum District. This new museum landmark is dedicated to showcasing stories inspired by themes of opportunity and empowerment through the lens of the African-American experience.
Among her many honors, Melanie was recognized as one of the YWCA’s “Outstanding Women of the Year,” as a “Woman of Distinction” by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and was the recipient of the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Houston Association of Black Journalists.
Melanie received her undergraduate degree in politics from Princeton University, holds a joint degree in law and journalism from Columbia University and is admitted to both the Texas and New York State bars. Her parents, Audrey and Reverend William Lawson are the founders of Houston’s well-known Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.
