Established in 1970, the National Black MBA Association is dedicated to creating partnerships that result in creating intellectual and economic wealth in the black community. The NBMBAA was formed as a professional organization by a group of MBA candidates at the University of Chicago. The Organization was incorporated in the state of New York in 1974 as a non-profit organization. In partnership with over 400 of the country’s top business organizations, the association has inroads into a wide range of industries as well as the public and private sector. Yet all of NBMBAA’s partners have one thing in common–they are all committed to the organization’s goals and values.
Professional and social events offered throughout the calendar year geared toward providing African-American professionals opportunities to network, discuss business challenges facing our community, or enjoy social activities. As for their leadership, the current President, Cheryl Long has more than 15 years experience in agency and contract management, marketing, accounting and finance. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and a MBA with a Concentration in Finance from the University of North Texas. Cheryl is a marketing communications and branding professional and works as a Senior Consultant in Agency Management for a communications company.
Cheryl, however , is not leading this association alone. In fact, she is accompanied by a sizeable cluster of other well-educated and extremely established leaders within the realm of NBMBAA. And, through a variety of activities, the National Black MBA Association Inc. is committed to grooming the National Black leaders of tomorrow. For example, Dallas Fort Worth high school students are exposed to successful individuals that share their career skills and experiences necessary for professional and educational development.
At the National Black MBA Association Inc., their stated vision is to be an organization that leads in the creation of economic and intellectual wealth for African Americans. Their Mission is to increase the number as well as the diversity of successful African Americans in the business community by providing innovative programs to stimulate the intellectual and economic state of being of all who are associated. Additionally, NBMBAA is committed to building partnerships with key stakeholders who help facilitate their growth. Besides that, the association also increases awareness and facilitates access to graduate management education programs and career opportunities in assorted fields of profession.
A practical portion of their operation is based on developing valuable relationships with corporate sponsors, driven largely by their ability to help those participants to reach their own business goals. And in turn, this capability creates great growth opportunities for NBMBAA. With their focus on acquisition, development, participation, and retention of leaders within significant ranks, this is a vital part of the organization and creates the clout and the suitable atmosphere for having the appropriate “pull” for gaining and maintaining partners and members.
According to member, Kevin T. Davis (Professor K Enterprises), he found his dream job through being an active member of the National Black MBA Association. “Serving as Chapter President and Corporate Relations Chair prepared me to make the transition into entrepreneurship.” said Mr. Davis. Deborah Warren (Sr. Business Systems Analyst, NBMBAA member) had this to say: “Being active on the Membership Committee forced me to break out of my comfort zone. I have met many great people that have motivated me to get more involved.” As for another member, Mr. Malcolm M.D. Mayo (Senior Financial Analyst), he said “I joined the National Black MBA Association to meet like-minded individuals who share a common vision for success and professionalism. My expectations have been exceeded in 8 years as a member.”
Essentially, NBMBAA simply knows what to do in order to connect the community and its leaders. Simply put, by having the “right people on the bus” with strategic partnerships driving their growth, they have great resources to become a prominent player in getting things done in the community. “Hands on” involvement by engaged leaders is the most effective way to build the NBMBAA brand equity and attract more leaders and build more relationships.
All things considered, great leaders have the power to attract. They attract other great leaders as well as individuals who are simply inspired by uplifting leaders. Likewise, they attract people who aspire to be effective leaders.
