PRAIRIE VIEW– After 18 years in the role of Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. E. Joahanne Thomas-Smith is making a transition. She will teach and continue to oversee accreditation efforts as the Institutional Accreditation Officer. The move is effective August 31, 2014. While at PVAMU, Dr. Thomas-Smith has served in many capacities, including director of the honors program, head of the Department of English and Foreign Languages, associate provost and director of Title III and provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. In her four decade career at Prairie View A & M University, Dr. Thomas-Smith has been actively involved in the University’s accreditation processes including the NCAA self-study, long-range planning and campus master plan development. In her role as chief academic officer, Thomas-Smith guided the creation of new degree programs and services, conceptualized and established student success programs such as the recent Increasing Reading and Engagement for Academic Development (iREAD) and the Center for Operation and Management of Personalized Academic Student Success (COMPASS). In 2012, the University recognized Dr. Thomas-Smith for her philanthropy and as the employee who had been the most consistent financial contributor. A committee will head up the search for the next senior vice president and provost. They will begin their work in December.
