Avatar’s story line has been crafted from World history, as almost all indigenous people of color have had to contend with European colonizers determined to steal the natural resources existing in the lands of these populations. In Europe’s quest to secure these resources belonging to foreign peoples, colonial forces demonstrated no regard for the indigenous people, their customs, or their right to exist as a sovereign body.

Such European acts of unfettered exploitation found its expression no more so than in South Africa, where the British—among other European groups—for more than a century have and continue to subjugate the original peoples of the land while simultaneously raping the region of its most precious commodities —its gold, platinum, coal and diamonds.

Avatar’s plot simply takes a page from this unfortunate segment of Africa’s history, as it places a group of foreign mercenaries—primarily composed and completely headed by those of European ancestry—in the land of the Na’vi, who seek to rob the indigenous people of their organic capital.

Black Women, Power & African Hair

In recent times, women of African descent within many industrialized nations have begun to garner significant financial, social and political standings. This phenomenon is especially found in the United States of America.
With the emergence of such figures as Oprah Winfrey, Tyra Banks and more recently Michelle Obama, African-American women have started to establish themselves within previously male dominated industries and have thus increased their visibility within exclusive social and political circles.

Is President Obama Playing the Game?

In recent weeks, the Obama administration has come under considerable fire, as it has attempted to advance its agenda regarding national health care reform.  Much of the opposition directed towards the president’s plan has expressed itself in a manner which many believe to pertain less to the proposal and more to the Head of State himself.  African-Americans, among other citizens, have voiced concerns over disturbing images and utterances emerging from those who oppose President Obama’s political intentions; as these expressions, in numerous instances, have been observed by some as acts deeply rooted in racism.

In recent times, much discussion has spawned regarding President Barack Obama’s general performance throughout his first few months in office.   Not only have the President’s acts been measured within this context, but also his works as they relate to the addressing of the concerns of the African American community.  While the Obama administration has primarily had to contend with our nation’s economic crisis; some African Americans have still found cause to level criticism towards the President asserting that he has essentially ignored many of the communities’ issues and to some degree the group itself.
