Cutting the Apron Strings

I always said that if I were to have a child, I would want it to be a boy. When I found out I was pregnant and carrying a male child, I envisioned myself teaching him how to treat (not mistreat) women and the meaning of being responsibile for himself. On October 28, 2004, my son, Joshua was born and that was the day my work began.

The issues of emancipation and military service were intertwined from the onset of the Civil War. News from Fort Sumter set off a rush by free Black men to enlist in U.S. military units. They were turned away, however, because a Federal law dating from 1792 barred Negroes from bearing arms for the U.S. Army (although they had served in the American Revolution and in the War of 1812).

Remembering Mama on Mother’s Day

Friday the 13th is perhaps the most widespread superstitious day. It’s weird because some people refuse to go to work on Friday the 13th; some won’t eat in restaurants; others wouldn’t think of setting a wedding on the date.  It is an unlucky day for some, for others, its just a regular day.
