60th University of St. Thomas Commencement George Foreman Addresses the Graduating Class of 2010

World heavyweight boxing champion and businessman George Forman will address the University of St. Thomas 2010 graduating class about “Success with Integrity,” at the 60th Commencement Ceremony, to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 15 at Reliant Arena. The ceremony will celebrate the achievements of 305 undergraduates and 320 graduate students. Commencement will be preceded by a Baccalaureate Mass held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 14 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1111 Saint Joseph Pkwy. The Mass is followed by a reception held on the UST campus.
Nicole Keith will take the stage as the student commencement speaker. She is a communication major and theology minor from Pearland. Her speech is titled, “A Generation of Possibility.” Honorary doctorates will be given to David M. McClanahan, President and Chief Executive Officer of CenterPoint Energy, and Dr. Joseph McFadden, University of St. Thomas President Emeritus. McClanahan previously served as Chairman of the UST Board of Directors from 1998-2002. The Vincent J. Guinan Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to Vincent D’Amico, class of 1952.
A video of the UST Commencement Ceremony will be streamed live on the UST Web site the during the ceremony beginning at approximately 10 a.m.

The St. Martin de Porres Society, Black Student Union and Social Justice Program at the University of St. Thomas will host a Black History Month lecture by Catherine Straight, national assignments editor at USA Today, from 6 to 8:15 p.m., Friday, Feb. 26, in the Menil Museum Foyer, 1515 Sul Ross. The lecture will be followed by a brief tour of the Menil’s African Art Exhibit.

Dr. Greer Gordon, director of Evangelization for the Diocese of Baton Rouge, will speak on “The Quest for Holiness in our Present World,” at the Dominican Sisters of Houston’s Spirituality Center. The two-day event begins with an evening presentation and free reception at 7-10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 and continues from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010.

St. Martin de Porres Society will celebrate its patron saint’s feast day at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the University of St. Thomas. Mass will be held at 5 p.m. in the Chapel of St. Basil, 3802 Yoakum.

University of St. Thomas launches African-American Alumni Society
For 10 years, Larry Payne’ 72, has dreamt about bringing University of St. Thomas African-American alumni together under one society. Payne, known in Houston as a champion of social justice, has dedicated his life’s work to his community and his alma mater –a community whose demographics are shifting, and a University that is poised to reach out to a new generation of diverse students.
