HOUSTON- AAN&I joins the rest of Texas in wishing former State Rep. Ron Wilson, wishes for a speedy recovery. Wilson, 55, suffered a stroke last month while at lunch with his son. Wilson spent 27 years in the state House.

Although his condition has improved, it reminds us that according to George Howard, DrPH, professor and chair of the department of biostatistics, University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health, a Black man living almost anywhere in the South increases his risk for dying from a stroke by 51% compared with a Black man living elsewhere.” In related news, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is September.

James Morning, a retired Air Force Master Sergeant and prostate cancer survivor said, “Prostate Cancer is the most common form of cancer in men striking approximately 200,000 men each year, with African-American men at highest risk. Every year, over 27,000 die of the disease—making it second only to lung cancer as the deadliest cancer in men. Caught early, prostate cancer can be treated, usually successfully. But, because many men experience no symptoms, it is often identified only by an abnormal result on a basic prostate cancer screening.”

This month, Men’s Health Network is urging men to talk to their doctors about prostate cancer.
