Houston Gospel Music Legend Receives Doctorate from Accredited Institute and Seminary

Darrell Rushing is a native Houstonian, at the age of seven; found his love for gospel music through inspirational hymns. His interests then attracted him to keys of both piano and organ by age 16. With the inspiration of his mother’s loving encouragement, the late Mrs. Nevora Rushing, his grandmother, the Late Mrs. Essie D. Rushing and his great aunt, Mrs. Angie Williams, he was determined to “go ahead in God… and take the chance”
His mastery of the organ, a unique and challenging instrument, exemplifies his expertise without fear and contradiction. Pursuant of his music ministry, he has gained invaluable knowledge and experience in the areas of songwriting, producing, music publishing, conducting workshops, copywriting and the preparation of numerous choirs for service in the music ministry. Now Minister Darrell L. Rushing has joined the ranks of Doctor receiving an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Sacred Music from Christian Bible Institution and Seminary on July 26, 2009.
Christian Bible Institution and Seminary is an accredited college located in Houston Texas where Dr. Tony V. Lewis is the President and Dr. C. Edward Moten is the Dean of Administration. The degree was presented at the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, Houston, Texas by Dr. Tony V, Lewis where Rev. Dr. Edwin A. Davis is pastor.
On July 13, 2009 Dr. Rushing was honored an received the “BC&S” Gospel Music Legends Award at the Houston Gospel’s Music Legends Gala at Houston’s Hyatt Regency Hotel hosted by the Houston Chapter of The Gospel Music Workshop of America..
As a credit to his many accomplishments, he has recorded professionally with the renowned the late Rev. James Cleveland, president and founder of the Gospel Music Workshop of America (G.M.W.A.). Dr. Rushing has presented and recorded numerous music compositions under the directorship of Mrs. Brenda J. Harland with the Gospel Music Workshop of America National Mass Choir.
Dr. Rushing is a member and serves as General Church Organist at the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. He is also currently serving as Minister of Music at the Mt. Herman Baptist Church, Houston, Texas where Rev. Richard Justice is pastor. Dr. . He has one son Darrell and one grandson Darien.
Dr. Rushing received a B.S Degree in Nutrition from Texas Southern University in 1978. He is currently enrolled in a M.B.A. (Non -Profit Religious Corporate Management) program at the Christian Bible Institute and Seminary. He is currently employed at Prairie View A & M University College of Nursing, Houston, Texas where Dr. Betty N. Adams serves as Dean.
Dr. Rushing is founder-president of the Gospel Music Awareness Mass Choir, Inc., of Houston and Owner of Rush-In Music a gospel publishing company. He has produced three albums and three CD’s of his own including one organ instrumental CD where Darrell is featured on the Hammond B3 Organ. He is the composer of the Grammy nominated “I owe it all to God” a song that is still touching the hearts of many listeners throughout the city and country on KTSU, 90.9 and Praise 92.9.fm.
For Dr Rushing it’s because of his faith in God, being under good covering of the word of God, dedication to his ministry and constant searching for perfection that another long awaited dream has become a reality To sum it up in Darrell’s own words “I owe it all to God”.
