HOUSTON- Although Christmas isn’t until December, the Crestmont Park community will soon be filled with the spirit of caring and giving as Project PRESS along with its sponsors and supporters will host its Block Party from noon to 5pm on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009.
Entering its seventh year, Project PRESS Block Party (People Reaching Excellence Striving & Succeeding) has helped nearly 4,000 people by bringing a fun-filled family day to its surrounding community, which is a predominantly African-American area marked by rampant substance-abuse, single-parent homes, a high level of school dropout rates, and high incidences of AIDS/HIV cases.
The Project PRESS Block Party started as a vision of Gateway Community Church. The vision is to bring members of the surrounding community together, in a Christian environment, to enjoy a fun time of fellowship while providing services that are essential to the community, such as health and social services. This event is not a fundraising event; rather it is an opportunity for the church to promote family values, unity in the neighborhood, and the pursuit of a better way of life.
This year, Gateway Community Church, Timmy Chan Restaurant, New Beginning Church, and many other business organizations are teaming to sponsor Project PRESS. Backpacks filled with school supplies will be given away to the first 100 registrants. Food, beverages, games, and entertainment will be provided for all attendants.
A Music Showcase will be hosted by Nzinga of Praise 92.1 and will feature local artists and talent. Children and teens can enjoy basketball, race cars, live story-telling and other fun activities. “Think of it as a small version of the county fair,” Pastor Brian Watson of Gateway Christian Ministries said.
