HOUSTON- Houston Community College Northeast, with the support of a grant from the Texas Education Agency partnered with HISD to establish the North Houston Early College High School, (ECHS) located across from the Northline Campus on Lyerly St. The ECHS program provides students with an opportunity to earn a high school diploma while earning college credits from HCC at no charge. Last fall, 105 students enrolled in the school with over 100 new students expected to enroll for fall 2009.
The ECHS is designed to give incoming ninth graders from HISD an opportunity to start off in college preparatory classes, later moving into academic and career technical education dual credit courses. Most classes are offered at the ECHS location, but students are also able to take classes with other college students at the Northline Campus by simply crossing the street. In addition to the traditional high school and college dual credit offerings, the ECHS offers specialized programs that focus on math, science, technology and engineering. With the support of a grant, the ECHS also offers a robotics program. Recently, students participating in the ECHS robotics program competed in the HCC Northeast Science Fair competition. Students exhibited and demonstrated robots created at the school, while competing against other high school and college students. North Houston ECHS students placed in several categories and won the highest award of excellence presented by Dr. Margaret Ford Fisher, HCC Northeast President.
Under the leadership and direction of Mr. Josiah Franklin, North Houston ECHS Principal, the school is expected to grow to full capacity and graduate students with both a high school diploma and AAS degree or up to two years of credit towards a Bachelor’s degree. Applicants interested in the North Houston ECHS must reside in the HISD attendance zone and be an incoming ninth-grade student.
