Families Under Urban and Social Attack, Inc. Hosts 9th Annual Family Health Day

Rev. Leslie Smith II HOUSTON- Families Under Urban and Social Attack, Inc. (FUUSA), a local community-based nonprofit organization serving at-risk families and youth, will host its 9th Annual Children’s Health Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Almeda Mall, 555 Almeda, (I-45 South and Almeda Genoa) and at Northwest Mall, (290 and Dacoma). “We started this program to make healthcare resources accessible to families, especially uninsured children in our community,” said FUUSA Founder/CEO Rev. Leslie Smith, II.
“I believe these services are even more crucial this year, especially since so many people are laid off and don’t even have basic health insurance,” he added. In addition to FUUSA’s Children’s Health Insurance (CHIP) and Food Stamp Programs, Children’s Health Day is at capacity with more than 80 local providers of children’s services participating including, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, YMCA of Greater Houston, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Children’s Protective Services, Department of State Health Services, Baylor Teen Clinic, Collaborative for Children, Spine Associates, YMCA International Services, Summit Dental Care, The US Census and several major Provider Health Plans including AMERIGROUP Community Care, Molina Health Care, Maximus and Community Health Choices. Fun aspects for the children include “Game Time Party” activities and entertainment, door prizes and culturally-diverse entertainment featuring local artists and performers.
Emcees for Children’s Health Day include Comedian and Houston’s Funniest Comedian Award Winner, Touchee Jackson and Christian Rap Artist and Entertainer, “Tre 9”.
Program organizers have invited several public officials to attend and demonstrate their support for Children’s Health Day. FUUSA is an 18-year-old Houston community-based nonprofit agency with staff that serve adults and at-risk youth in Harris and surrounding counties.
Under the leadership of Smith, FUUSA provides prevention and mentorship programs for youth, supportive services to the homeless, HIV prevention, abstinence education and assistance for families of uninsured children who apply for Children’s Health Insurance (CHIP).
