Julia C. Hester House Gears-Up for Back to School 2009

HOUSTON- Julia C. Hester House is once again gearing up for the upcoming school year with “Back on the Block II,” a back to school event. Entertainment will be provided by Archie Bell. The event will take place on Saturday, August 15, 2009 from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Hester House, 2020 Solo Street in the 5th Ward.
The event will include fun educational activities and health screening to promote a healthy and productive upcoming school year. “Our goal is to reach 300 to 400 families with children of all ages, but we will especially focus our distribution of school supplies and personal hygiene products to Middle and High School youth so they can focus and be prepared for the class room work at hand” said Jennifer K. Holmes, executive director of Hester House. “Based on our research, back to school efforts are generally geared toward elementary school aged children. It is our hope to be able start the new school year right by assisting all students and families in the 5th Ward and surrounding communities.”
Hester was a community leader and educator in Fifth Ward. The School Supplies are sponsored by CenterPoint Energy, and will be distributed to those students who pre-register by filling out a request form by August 12, 2009. For more information, call (713)672-2573.
