Urgent need to address Obesity in the African American Community
Obesity is doing more to damage the African American and Latino community than the criminal activity that we read about in the media. A recent CDC report noted that 38% of African Americans and 29% of Latinos are obese. These numbers say that 1 out of 3 people in these communities are suffering with issues or will be suffering with issues related to obesity. A 14 year old North Carolina youth was removed from his mother, because of felony child neglect. The 14 year old weighs 555 lbs. Right or wrong on the charges, this child is suffering in this condition. His quality of life, as a child is being impacted and his overall health is in jeopardy. He's not the only child in this condition, but him and children like him carry these issues on into adulthood and could possibly transfer it to his or their children. In such a case the harmful condition and the problems that can go with it are perpetuated. We must educate our community on developing a higher and healthier lifestyle. Obesity and the problems related to it is crippling healthcare and blocking chances of acquiring adequate health insurance.
