HOUSTON— The Alpha Xi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., has selected Terri Fleming and Berincya Taylor as its 2009 Anita Hairston Scholars. The award is named in honor of  Anita Hairston, the founder of Alpha Xi Sigma Chapter and a Life Member of Sigma Gamma Rho. 

Soror Hairston was the first African-American to graduate from the University of Tulsa in 1954 with a Masters in Education.  Her struggles and commitment to educating the youth of the community is evident in this scholarship that has been awarded as part of a continuing legacy since her passing in 1996.
 Fleming is a graduating senior of Booker T. Washington High School and a concurrent student at Tulsa Community College.  She plans to major in Nursing and is still determining which college or university to attend. 

She is a 2009 Simon Estes Merit Scholarship Recipient as well.  Fleming is a member of the Principals Honor Roll, member of the National Honor Society, Oklahoma Superintendent Academic Scholar, nominated for the National Youth Leadership Academy, member of the Key Club, Spanish Club, and Student Council Member at Large.  She is a member of Tulsa Children’s Chorus and Tulsa Youth Chorale, BTW Jazz Singers and studies piano with Dorothy McFadden. 
She has received superior ratings at OSSAA District solos and ensemble competition in solo and two duets and invited to sing in All OCDA Women’s chorus.  She graduated 16 in a class of 289.

In addition she is an active member of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church and  is the daughter of Sonya Goff.
Taylor is a graduating senior at Booker T. Washington High School and plans to attend Oklahoma State University majoring in Psychology.  She is a member of the Marching Band (Section Leader), Spanish Club, African-American Society, president of the Economic Youth Group, volunteer Lifeguard, Red Cross Volunteer Water Safety Aid and supervisor of Hawthorne School Dancers.

She is the children’s choir president at Metropolitan Baptist church. Taylor is the daughter of Robin Taylor.
The sorority also honored the graduating seniors of the Rhoer Club.  This year the honorees are Che’la Nalls, graduating senior of Booker T. Washington High School and Ciarra Oates, a graduating senior of Central High School.

The scholarship reception was held last month at the Rudisill Library.  LaTonya Jackson is Scholarship Chairman of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc,. and Wyvonne E. Marshall is chapter president.
