HOUSTON- The life and legacy of James D. Smith, Sr., an active Acres Homes community member, was recently remembered. He was born in Needville, Texas to Bertha Newsom and Eddie Smith, on August 5, 1942. At an early age, his family moved to Houston.
James attended Booker T. Washington Senior High School, in Houston. He married Vera R. Smith and they had two sons, James D. Smith, Jr. and Ethan Smith (deceased) and two daughters, Taboura E. Smith and Rodronda Smith. 

He was a member of The Community of Faith Church for over 20 years, under the leadership of Bishop James Dixon II. He faithfully served the Acres Homes Community through: Ella Park Terrace Civic Club, Old Acres Homes Citizen Council, P.I.P., Acres Homes Community Development Corp., Acres Homes Super Neighborhood Council, U.T./ Acres Homes Partnership, Central Care Community Center and Sisterhood of Faith. He was also the recipient of many community service awards.

He leaves to cherish his memories; his wife of 43 years, Vera, two daughters, Taboura and Rodronda, one son, James Jr., one sister, Pearlie Smith, one sister-in-law; Barbara A. Roberts, two brothers-in-law; Wilbert Robert and Robert Hughes, and a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
