The Houston Public Library System offers free Summer Reading Program

HOUSTON- The Houston Public Library’s free 2009 Summer Reading Program Thrills and Chills is happening now. Kids and teens up to 18 years of age can chill out and enjoy the thrills of many diverse and fun programs thru August 1, 2009. They will be able to participate in exciting, entertaining, and educational programs that will help them keep up with their reading skills.
In addition to their participation in the city’s largest reading program, kids ages 0-12 and teens ages 13-18 will receive some cool incentives when they read 20 books or read for 20 hours. The more books they read the more prizes they will win. The Houston Public Library’s Summer Reading Program encourages kids and teens to read during the sizzling days of summer to elevate their reading skills in preparation for the next school year. More than 800 diverse free programs and events will take place during the two-month program. Special programs and activities planned for kids up to 12 years of age include presentations by Houston area performing arts groups, and visits by liaisons of community service organizations and award-winning children’s book authors.
Power Card registration is free and allows customers to borrow books, movie DVDs, music CDs, and other materials, plus computer and Internet use within the library. Kids and teens under 18 years of age must obtain their parent or guardian’s signature to receive a Power Card.
