“Life Lessons from Mom: Continuing the Journey of Growth”
DALLAS- The Remembering Mom Luncheon, is an annual event where women gather to commemorate their mother’s lives the Saturday before Mother’s Day. This years luncheon will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 12 Noon, at the Omni Hotel, 1590 LBJ Freeway. Various activities will take place during the luncheon that allow the women an opportunity to share memories of their mother with others including a candle-lighting ceremony, memory reflection and discussions, resolutions offered, a balloon launch, etc. while still feeling a sense of celebration in spite of the physical absence of the mothers.
The guest speaker will be Jami Garrison. She lost her mom at the age of 16. Jami would spend the next 17 years trying to find a way to ease the grief that had shaped her young life and to share her mother with the world. Then in 1998 she discovered the Internet and a way to reach out to millions. She began the Mom’s Halo website as a memorial to her mother, but that soon turned into a forum and small online community for sharing stories about mother loss and offering hope to the bereaved.
An annual scholarship will also be offered to a young adult female who has experienced motherloss. The candidate must be 18-25 years old, with plans to attend college or graduate school, pursing a major and career of their choice. The candidate selected must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, and be living in Texas. The scholarship amount will range from $500-1,000 per semester. Scholarships will be awarded in the spring of each year for the fall semester. The potential recipient must submit a 500-word essay about her mother, and the importance she feels to pursue an education in spite of her mom’s absence. Seating for the luncheon is $45 each.
