One of the biggest lies out there, and being propagandized by a group that is calls itself the Sons of Confederate Veterans, is the falsehood that Blacks fought to protect their slave owning masters. We can suppose that there were some that did, just like there were some who sold out Martin Luther King and were paid snitches against the Black Panthers and SNCC. But the overwhelming majority of African- Americans would have never been trusted with a gun given to them by a racist, slave-owning Confederate government.
The mental propaganda that Blacks were forced to endure probably produced some misguided and ignorant people that thought they could believe the lies of the southern gentlemen slave owning class. We can certainly assume that some Blacks fought for the slave owners because they were forced to do so, and their families threatened with death by the Southern murderous slave class. It would also stand to reason that free Blacks might have been tempted to fight for the Confederacy since their status as freemen would be jeopardized if they didn’t.
There were all sorts of ways to intimidate Blacks in those days including rape, hanging, beatings, and sheer terror. All of these methods were used by the brutal and murderous Confederate States to suppress slave rebellions and Black insurrections. Why would one argue about the number of Blacks that fought for the Confederacy, if any, unless one was trying to justify slavery and racism?
We can find instances of Native Americans who fought with U.S. soldiers intent on committing genocide against another Native American tribe, but that does not mean they weren’t duped. In fact, many Native Americans were promised all sorts of “forked tongued” gifts if they helped destroy other tribes. Some fell for it!
The same can be argued that there must have been some Uncle Toms that wanted to protect their slave masters, and some who were forced or given false promises. We can be sure of one thing, the Southern Heritage of racism, slavery, and murder was coupled with a campaign of sophisticated lies designed to fool people into supporting one of the most evil regimes in history—the Confederate States of America. There is no such thing as “Southern Heritage” outside of the realm of slavery, hatred, murder, and bigotry.
The South has already begun its journey toward self-inspection, with the realization that the Southern way of life was ruined and tainted by slavery. We always have to look with a weary-eye at anyone who refuses to accept the fact that “Southern Heritage” can never be divorced from the horrors of genocide and murder against its Black citizens. Anyone talking about “Southern heritage” outside of its racist history is a Klansman, a fool, or just plain ignorant.
The great majority of Blacks hated the southern heritage of slavery and racism. Some of them were smart enough to bide their time by telling their slave masters that they supported them over the Union forces, while all the while plotting for the defeat of the rebels. Some even served as spies and provided valuable information as to where the rebels were hiding and had hidden their weapons.
Many slaves escaped the racist South, deserting their forced allegiance to the Confederacy, and joined the Union armies to help with crushing blows that finally ended the institution of slavery. Many free Blacks, fearful of the laws that the southern states were enacting after John Brown’s raid, offered their services to the Confederacy by building defensive works and constructing vessels. But, they only did so in order to protect their freedom or the hope of it.
There are pictures of Blacks in Confederate unions, but this proves nothing as it was a common practice to use Blacks as propaganda to make people in the North think that Blacks loved being slaves. We cannot believe pictures from that era nor newspaper accounts claiming that Blacks supported the South for the simple reason that the slave owners owned the newspapers, and had the ability to force Blacks to say whatever they wanted under penalty of death.
Some pictures appear to be forged as they were of Black Mexicans. These were not slaves at all. Blacks were forced into service and made to do the work of the Confederate States of America. This is something that should never be celebrated and is a disgrace to raise it to the level of a civilized society.
Any people that are forced to take up arms in defense of their slavers or oppressors can never be equated with justice or heroism. We must realize that the Confederate States of America was an ugly blot upon history and should never be celebrated. That organization should be looked at in much the same way we view the despicable Nazi regime of Adolph Hitler. Everyone should be careful when surfing the web for there are dozens of racist Web sites that repeat the lies that the slave owners invented hundreds of years ago.

Thanks for what Dinah? A flat out racist rant and historical lie? Don't let your opinion be based on this guy's lack of historical and journalistic integrity. Do your own research. There were black Confederates. Frederick Douglass even wrote in his Monthly, IV (Sept 1861) : "There are at the present moment many colred men in the Confederate Army as real soldiers, having muskets on their shoulders....ready to shoot down loyal troops, and do all that soldiers may do to destroy the Federal government....."

Your very first sentance contradics the next sentence. And by-the-way read some of Lincoln and his racist rants and attack the north as much as you people attack the South.

Have you ever heard of William "April" Ellison?
Did you know Lincoln supported a Constitutional Amendment allowing slavery as a guaranteed right? Did you know that US Grant owned slaves? The list goes on and on... the point being... you might educate yourself before writing an essay. (Comment Replies Disabled)

The ignorance, stupidity, extreme bias and overall mean spiritedness of this man's black heart prevents anyone from attempting, in good faith, to try and enlighten him. As much of an exercise in futility as attempting to reform a serial murderer.
This is really too bad because such purveyors of lies and distortions are fully convinced of their own righteousness. So were lincoln, Lenin, Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and other expeditors of genocide. (Comment Replies Disabled)

I honestly don't know when I've read a more childish rant than this one by Mr. Salas. Not only does his writing style mirror that of a typical ninth grader but his ignorance abounds as he pretends to know what was in the minds of all the slaves in the South during this period. In actuality, most slaves tried to stay out of the fray as it was generally considered "a white man's war." Those blacks, some slaves, some free, who did serve the South did so for many reasons -- loyalty, necessity, or by force. The Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 brought freedom from slavery front and center as a cause and many blacks who had stayed out of it now saw a chance to fight for liberation. Some blacks serving in the Confederate Army deserted and joined the Union. These facts in no way discredit the courage and sacrifice of those black confederates who suffered for four long years through many campaigns and battles alongside their white brothers-in-arms. Their pride followed them their entire lives as evident by the presence of many former black confederates at veteran reunions. Mr. Salas ridicules, berates, and then makes excuses for them. He further debases himself by confusing slavery as practiced in the US with genocide and compares the Confederacy with Nazi Germany. Unfortunately, Mr Salas cripples himself literarily through his lack of knowledge and his nonintellectual blathering.

Mr. Salas obviously doesn't want his opinion confused by facts. Blacks were not fighting to defend slavery (what an absurd notion!) They fought to protect the only homes they knew. Lincoln's so-called Emancipation was intended to have the military effect of causing the slaves that had been left at home to care for the women, aged and children, to rise up and either leave or else wreak havoc on the plantations and homesteads. The measure was a total flop on that count, demonstrating Lincoln's total ignorance of the minds and hearts of the slaves who were overwhelmingly considered as family members, albeit of a lower state than the white family members. Lincoln's speech had far-reaching political success, but none at all as a military measure.
Mr. Salas should label his tripe as "wishful thinking" and not publish it. There is already enough pollution in this world without his adding to it. (Comment Replies Disabled)

I can't see how you can say that. Your article is a flat out lie. The US even before 1776 bought blacks to build there Empire City's in the North and then turned around and sold slaves to the south for plantation work so they could have lot 's of prodution of food for the North. The yanks are the scum not The Confedrates

Hey Mr. Know-it-all, nowhere in your 831 word rant do I see any historical proof which backs your contention. All I see is your huffing and puffing. Want to know why we left the union? Hint - it wasn't because we were dead set on keeping our slaves. Look in the mirror and you'll see the reason. It was to get away from self-righteous blowhards like you!
And just who the hell do you think you are to pass judgment on men who risked their lives? Most of them had more guts in their little finger than you have in your entire worthless body. A piece of advice - stick to things you actually know something about - whatever those things may be. “And to you our colored friends….we say welcome. We can never forget your faithfulness in the darkest hours of our lives. We tender to you our hearty respect and love, for you never faltered in your duty nor betrayed your trust.” -- Colonel William Sanford - (From an address given before the Confederate Veterans of the 7th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment of Cavalry, Forrest’s Corps, at the Columbia, Tennessee reunion of September 22, 1876) "Then de war came and we all went to fight the Yankees. I was a body servant to the master, and once a bullet took off his hat. We all thought he was shot but he wasn't, and I was standin' by his side all the time. "I remember Stonewall Jackson. He was a big man with long whiskers, and very brave. We all fought wid him until his death. We wa'n't beaten, we was starved out! Sometimes we had perched corn to eat and sometimes we didn't have a bite o' nothin', because the Union mens come and tuk all de food for theirselves”…. Mr Salas,
I can tell you have no knowledge of history and I am surprise this group lets you write without any documentation. Here's a question for you. Can you tell why the US Federal Census from 1790 to 1860 always showed that the Majority of Free Blacks lived in the South instead of in the North? (Comment Replies Disabled)

This has about as much value as Hitler's rants, and about as accurate. Mr. Salas missed his calling.........he could have written for Pravda during the Soviet Union's existence. Certainly, he twists he subject matter and fabricates history as well as any card-carrying Marxist. What an embarrassment to journalistic ethics.

I know there were at least 59,000 free Negroes living in Virginia in 1860, according to the census. General Washington's slaves (several hundred) were freed by the terms of his will (1799), and by 1860, thousands of their descendants were living and prospering in Northern Virginia and proudly proclaiming their connection to Washington and their status as Virginians. The American Heritage Magazine reported (February 1987 issue, I believe) that, in Virginia in 1860, at least 300 Negroes owned slaves. The history is far too complex for someone as angry as Salas to understand, let alone report. As we contemplate the strides that the nation has made in civil rights in the last 50 years, including the election of a mixed-race ("black") president, it is well to remember that there are race-hustlers like Salas always ready to sew hatred between the races. Everyone loses.

Hey Mario! You're not just the least bit blinded by your obvious hate for the south, are you? Try reading Black Southerners in Confederate Armies. Also, my 3rd great grandfather served with a free man of color in his company in Louisiana. You talk about propaganda...your article is the worst sort of propaganda and you have totally blown any chance at credibility with your racist and bigoted rant.

The term that fits the writer's, Mario Salas, mentality and mind-set is Presentism.
When our fellow citizens recoil in horror, disgust, hatred or fear from a Southern symbol, like Lee-Jackson Day, or Jefferson Davis, just as a vampire shrieks at the Cross, and refutes the facts of black Confederates they’re engaged in “presentism.” It’s an affliction of the mind that pollutes the spirit and poisons the body politic. Presentism is the empty, false assumption that all former people thought as some present people feel. It’s fundamental to the worldview of Liberal Human Secularists who worship the trinity of race, class, and gender(s). It’s necessary for their hierarchy of evil that demonizes political and cultural enemies. It makes nothing Conservatives say count, because Conservative speech is permanently tainted by some hatred, intolerance, historical crime or politically incorrect no-no. The presentism definition from Wikipedia lays out its flaws: “Presentism is a mode of historical analysis in which present-day ideas and perspectives are anachronistically introduced into depictions or interpretations of the past. Some modern historians seek to avoid presentism in their work because they believe it creates a distorted understanding of their subject matter. (Comment Replies Disabled)

There really isn't much more to add here, then what has been posted by the folks listed above. Besides providing no historical documentation for his ranting(s), Mr. Salas attempts to equate the Confederacy with Nazi Germany. He (Salas) lacks any type of rudimentary understanding of slavery. Almost universally, slave owners, (who were businessmen), viewed their slaves as expensive property. It simply wasn't good business practice to mistreat expensive property. That's not to say there weren't some cruel owners, or that the practice of slavery isn't repugnant and despicable. But the wanton mistreatment of slaves in the South is a fallacy.
It's interesting to note that slavery still exists is some places, even today. Most notably, slavery is still practiced is some parts of Africa. Lastly, I wish Mr. Salas could have attended a recently held memorial service for a Black Confederate, Weary Clyburn. A Confederate marker noting Weary's service was placed at his grave site. Judging from the pride that Mr. Clyburn's descendants felt on that occasion, my guess is they would not share Mr. Salas' pajorative view of their Confederate ancestor. (Comment Replies Disabled)

perhaps those slaves were simply being good Christians. In Ephesians we are told, "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is salve or free."

I spent 6 years in the military defending your right to publish this garbage and, in your case, I regret it because of the obvious lack of research and facts in your biased rant. To be brief let me address your point about pictures and news articles from the south being propaganda and unbelievable. Are you aware, Mr. Salas, that it was your own, revered President Lincoln that violated the constitutional rights and imprisoned over 13,000 people that publicly opposed him in speech and in print. In fact, Mr. Lincoln had less regard for the Constitution than any other President in history. The true history of the period remains but it takes some effort to dig it up. The fact that you chose to repeat the popular, biased, revisionist view is a discredit to your credibility as a writer and a waste of my time reading it.
