Gov. Perry Appeals to Supremacist Groups

Gov. Perry’s talk about secession, has scored him big points with supremacist groups “We’ve got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, ...”
When myths become reality they take on a life of their own. This is true of the way White supremacy has ritualized the symbols of its ideal. Recently, Governor Rick Perry made a remark that will go down in history as one of the most ignorant things a person could say in the 21st Century.
Speaking at an anti-tax rally, one of many that extreme right-wing nuts are trying to infiltrate and take over, Governor Perry said that Texas had the right to secede from the United States. Speaking like a confederate soldier that just popped out of the cemetery, Perry made a fool of himself by appealing to the KKK, the Montana Militia, and White supremacists across the state. He may have been able to garner quite a bit of support from hate groups that still think they are living in the 1800s.
Anyone who says that they are a Texan first and an American second is obviously a member of some crazed group that practices hatred on a regular basis. Texas became the laughing stock of many a few years back when it came up with its own pledge that many people still refuse to say. Many teachers across the state have refused to say the “Texas Pledge” because in the words of one teacher, “I live in the United States of America, not the United States of Texas!” Those of us who thought that creating a separate pledge was just part and parcel of the old worn out Alamo syndrome were in for more drama when Perry used secession talk to drudge up old hatreds. Many southern racists still cling to the ritual of thinking that the South was right for fighting a war to protect slavery. When confronted with their bigotry, they fall back on an excuse that they have been panhandling for years.
When Southern racists attempted to justify slavery they fell back on the argument of “States Rights.” This argument attempted to reduce the argument over slavery to a 10th Amendment, which says that “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
So if we had let the Southern bigots have their way they would have let slavery flourish in their states. Using the 10th Amendment as a ploy to sucker punch people into believing that anyone would let them secede is insane to be sure. Historically, subsequent to the Civil War, the Tenth Amendment was in effect suspended.
During the Reconstruction era, the U.S. troops subjugated the former Confederate states and made it mandatory that each rebel and racist-oriented state ratify the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, which outlawed slavery, provided for due process of law, and gave African-Americans the right vote. If we had let these racist rebels in Texas have their way slavery might still exist, Jim Crow might still be alive, and non-Whites might still not be able to vote. Under martial law the plantation owners and their KKK allies were subdued and prevented from slaughtering any more African-Americans and those who had opposed secession.
If anyone tries to secede Texas from the union they should immediately be arrested, and those of us who love America would aid in this effort. Loyal Americans across the state have said “just try it and we will stop it!”
But all of this rhetoric is really just false political baloney. There isn’t enough support in Texas for this to become anything but a fantasy. No one is going to secede Texas from the Union and would probably not succeed even if they tried.
I guess we can expect to see Governor Perry stand on top of the Alamo and scream “freedom!” What sort of ignorance and foolishness was Perry using when he made his remark before a bunch of ignorant people in Austin, Texas? We all have problems with the current taxing system, including the toll road tax that Perry was trying to force down our throats.
Unfortunately, many of the so-called “tea parties” that took place across Texas were hijacked by the Texas Hate Party; advocates of a return to the pre-Civil War days of slavery and the southern states right to oppress their own people. Perry was just playing politics because he needs some support if he thinks he is going to beat his rival Kay Bailey Hutchison. Perry sunk to the lowest level by appealing to Confederates out of the cemetery, the KKK, and other extremist nuts.
Anytime one appeals to the idea of secession you are bound to stir up those that are still living in the ritualized past of White supremacy and slavery. Good try Gov. Perry, but there will never be a secession!

This article is ridiculous. I'm sure most of us can agree that Rick Perry is not the most brilliant man that ever governed Texas, but you, Mr. Salas, twisted a stupid comment into a ploy against black people all over Texas! I agree Perry is trying to appease people for votes but I really don't think he's trying to revive the Confederation. That's a comment that wasn't well thought out on your part
