Amid the recent earthquake and devastation in Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, we have witnessed the global effort of 30 nations coming to rescue the lives of our brothers and sisters in Haiti. The 7.0 earthquake so far has caused much damage and a death toll of 50,000 precious lives. The death toll rises as each day passes. Watching the graphic pictures as reporters bring Haiti to our living rooms, we hear the clarion call. We hear the anguished cries of the Haitian people over the deaths of their loved ones. We see children trapped under slabs of concrete desperately waiting for someone to rescue them. We see thousands of bodies lying in the streets waiting to be buried. We see survivors of this earthquake carrying their meager possessions become panicked as they wait for food, water, and medical treatment.

The Government of Haiti is a weak governing entity. The nation of Haiti has had very little success in building financial security, governmental leaders, and human services for the people. History has proven that corruption of its past presidents is a direct cause for the damaging effects which has earned Haiti the reputation of being the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Yet, the people of Haiti are heroes because of their resilience, their ability to hold on to their human dignity, and their faith in God notwithstanding the continual life of poverty. This is about to change.

Relief efforts can only be sustained if and when the global community commits itself to long term efforts of recovery and building the nation of Haiti with every resource available for the next generation of Haitians. Such efforts must continue. As President Obama spoke with fervent passion, "To the people of Haiti, we say clearly, and with conviction, you will not be forsaken; you will not be forgotten. In this, your hour of greatest need, America stands with you.” This is our America not just Obama's America. Every hand is needed for this humanitarian crisis.

America is known for its leadership role for humanitarian aid throughout the world. We as a people were born to show the rest of the world, that God shed His grace on us and crowned us with brotherhood from sea to shining sea. People all over the world expressed compassion by their participation in trying to relieve some of the suffering in Haiti. Now, there are shipments of food, water, medical supplies, human resources of men and women from all walks of life, and humanitarian relief organizations such as the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Samaritan Purse – a sea of human beings rescuing other human beings in the midst of destruction. It is in these tragic times we are reminded that natural disasters humble all of us. What should be our response?

Many Christian leaders were embarrassed and reacted with disappointment by the heartless response of Pat Robertson: "They were under the heel of the French ... and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you'll get us free from the French.'

"True story. And the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal,'" Robertson said. "Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another."

Shame on you! Where is your sensitivity and compassion? Unlike Pat Roberson, Franklin Graham's immediate deployment of his ministry team to Haiti gave power to his actions. The Samaritan Purse Ministries is now taking part along with other Christian organizations in the relief efforts for the suffering Haitians. Pat Robertson's statement is analogous to a shotgun shooting at the hearts of the Haitian people, trying to kill their hope and faith in a merciful and loving God. Robertson, and some like-minded ministers, stands for a religious institution which has built their theology on sinking sand. God stands for justice. We have no right to play God and speak death to the destiny of a nation and its people. Unfortunately, Robertson weighed the theology of curses with an expressed cold, calculating rationale creating a determinative factor for him to judge that God has left the Haitian people into the hands of the devil to be destroyed.

The question for Pat Robertson to answer is this: How can you look into the eyes of many children , for all the world to see on T.V., and justify your death sentence, while they cling onto every hope, cry in pain, their fragile bodies pinned underneath heavy concrete, and fear for their lives? How can you look into the eyes of the thousands of men and women from all over the world, who sacrificed their time and money to come to Haiti? Thank God our prayers and love have more power than a curse.

Pat Robertson owes Haiti and the international community an apology. Without realizing the gravity of his words, Pat Robertson spoke an imprecation against God's children - the Haitian people.
