The federal bill commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was signed into law by former president Ronald Reagan amidst much opposition on Nov. 2, 1983?
However, Texas did not pass the bill to commemorate King’s birthday as an optional state holiday until Aug. 1987. It became an official state holiday June 11, 1991.
Confederate Heroes Day, celebrated Jan. 19, was signed into law Aug. 27, 1973.
