Dominican Spirituality Center presents “The Quest for Holiness in our Present World”

Dr. Greer Gordon, director of Evangelization for the Diocese of Baton Rouge, will speak on “The Quest for Holiness in our Present World,” at the Dominican Sisters of Houston’s Spirituality Center. The two-day event begins with an evening presentation and free reception at 7-10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 and continues from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010.

The quest for god and the things of God are fundamental to the human person. This conference will reflect on the human person’s desire for and the pursuit of holiness.

Dr. Greer, a native a Baton Rouge, is a former member of the faculty at Regis College in Weston, Conn., and has taught in the Department of Philosophy and African American Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. She also served as the director of the Office for Black Catholics in the Archdiocese of Boston. Dr. Greer is the author of several publications including The Study Guide for What We Have Seen and Heard and Symphonies of the Heart.

The Dominican Spirituality Center was founded in 2009 with the goal to develop and share the Dominican environment with the wider community as a safe haven and a space for nurturing body, mind and spirit.

“Integral to this environment is shared prayer, celebration and dialogue about critical and relevant topics that embrace evolving world views.” said Center Director Sr. Carol Mayes. The Spirituality Center is characterized by a collaborative spirit rooted in Biblical values and Dominican spirituality: study, contemplation, community and mission.” 

The Dominican Sisters of Houston is a Catholic community of women whose mission is “to publicly commit ourselves to study and address the crucial justice issues of our times.” The sisters’ active ministries include teaching and school administration, hospital chaplaincy, prayer, campus ministry and parish ministry.
