Thank you, Houston! And thanks African-American News&Issues, especially Mr. Malonson, his wife, Shirley and its readers. We have another two years to do the People’s work. You came out and spoke loudly.
We went up against Goliath and were victorious. Houston Fort Bend County put us over the top! It’s amazing that some forgot how crucial Houston Fort Bend was to Mayor Lee Brown’s victory.
Our team stayed focused and kept the issue on the people’s work, not mudslinging. You told me that the people should determine who represents you, not elected officials.
We focused on issues, specifically about equal distribution of and access to services related to public safety, the economy, affordable housing, drainage and infrastructure, small, women and minority business, green space, unsafe and unhealthy businesses, side walks, parks, bill boards, among other issues. Very rarely are average citizens triumphant over the powers-that-be. In the near future, please pay attention to issues related to a proposed ambulance fee hike from $415 and 7.50/mile to $800 and $16.00/mile, encouraging the City of Houston to require sufficient retention and detention lest our homes and neighborhoods flood more, and posting required notice on important City of Houston issues in community newspapers.
If you ask my Mom, there is always a reason why God allows bad things to happen to good people, and that’s to build character. In my Grandmother’s words, “if it doesn’t kill you, it’ll make you stronger.”
With that being said, we are now better equipped to do the work of the people after being put through the fire. You came out and voted and carried us to victory. That’s why Jolanda “Jo” Jones remains your At-Large 5 Houston City Council Member.
Please know that I am honored and I look forward to continued service on issues you ask me to pay attention to. Just remember “The People Are The City!”
Jolanda “Jo” Jones in At-Large 5 Houston City Council Member.
