On Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, the city of Houston will hold a run-off election for the following positions. Here are the recommendations of AAN&I.

For Mayor:  Controller Annise Parker. For all the reasons enumerated in my endorsement article in this edition of AAN&I.

For At-Large 5:  Incumbent Houston City Council Member Jolanda “Jo” Jones. She is the “Conscience of Council.”  She hasn’t been bought or sold and she continues to fight for us even when the establishment wants her to be quiet and let them treat us like second-class citizens.  She continues to warn us about ordinances which will negatively impact us.  She stands up for right even when it’s not the popular thing to do.  Jolanda is just Jolanda.  She is our voice and we need to vote for her and re-elect her to City Hall.  Her opponent is a Republican who was a George W. Bush state board appointee and who is proud to have helped put George Bush into the White House.  He is also endorsed by the Steve Hotze, the right-wing conservative hate monger who also hates women and African-Americans.  Just go vote for Jolanda.

For At-Large 2:  Rev. Andrew C. Burks.  He’s committed to working for all people of the City, not just the usual suspect like his opponent Sue Lovell.  He’s fought against Southern Crushed Concrete.  He’ll fight to keep us safe but challenge the police not to profile.  He’ll also work on a comprehensive flood control plan unlike his opponent who allows developers to build at will which has caused increased flooding all over the city.  He will work to keep the City transparent and to help seniors, disabled and veterans with tax breaks.  In Burks’ defense, I believe he is endorsed by Steve Hotze because Hotze hates gays and Lovell is gay.  I say all of this to say that, in addition to Burks being a new needed voice at City Hall, he will replace Lovell who, if you will recall, has disdain for African-Americans by her words, votes and action, except that she will give a proclamation in a heartbeat to a minority and show up at minority events so as to give the appearance that she supports us.  Again, we need to vote for Andrew for two reasons, a) because he will be a competent and fair council member and b) he’ll replace someone who doesn’t respect African-Americans, Sue Lovell.  Lovell is one of the ones who voted to run AAN&I and other newspapers like it, out of down town.

Controller:  AAN&I offers the same disclaimer as above.  However Ronald Green is a Democrat and MJ Khan is a Republican who is also endorsed by the infamous Steve Hotze.

At-Large 1:  AAN&I will not endorse because we are only endorsing people who we believe will fight to include us at the table at City Hall.  However, Karen Derr is a Democrat and Steve Costello is on the Republican Leadership Council.  He is not an independent as he’s now calling himself.  Costello is also endorsed by the racist Steve Hotze as well.

District A:  AAN&I offers the same disclaimer as above.  However Lane Lewis is a Democrat and Brenda Stardig is a Republican who is also endorsed by the infamous Steve Hotze.
