SAN MARCOS- Homecoming at Texas State University (TSU) which offers nearly 200 undergraduate and post-graduate degrees, is one of the university’s longest-running annual traditions. The university usually plans a week’s worth of events culminating at Bobcat Stadium when the football team hosts another Southland Conference team.
This year, Quarterback Bradley George threw for 324 yards and four touchdowns to lead Texas State University to a 28-7 victory over No. 11 Stephen F. Austin University in its homecoming game at Bobcat Stadium. In addition, SFA’s defense held the nation’s top scoring offense to a season-low seven points.
“This was a heck of a football game versus a very good and much improved football team over the past couple of years,” said Texas State Coach Brad Wright. Texas State took an early 7-0 lead with 8:43 left to play in the first quarter when George hit Mishak Rivas in the back of the end zone for a nine yards catch.
It was the first touchdown reception of the season for Rivas and it capped a nine-play, 67-yard drive. Ryan Batchelor added the extra point. The first stop for Texas State came in the first quarter when SFA’s Evan Engwall missed a 22-yard field goal.
In the second quarter, Texas State’s Travis Houston put pressure on Jeremy Moses as he attempted to throw a pass on a fourth-down play from the one-yard line. The third stop inside the red zone, Texas State’s Joe Bell forced a fumble by Romont Hampton and Marcus Clark recovered the ball at TSU’s 11-yardline.
Texas State pinned SFA at their own six yard line after their drive stalled. The Bobcats took advantage when George hit Alvaro Garcia for an eight-yard touchdown pass to cap a five-play, 35-yard drive.
The Bobcats gained most of the yardage when George hit Rivas on a screen pass that resulted in a 21-yard gain all the way down to the three-yard line. The Lumberjacks got a small break and for a moment, it seemed like momentum was slowing when Alvin Canady was tackled for a five-yard loss, George hit Garcia in the end zone to put the Bobcats ahead for good. Texas State increased its lead to 21-7 with 3:58 left in the fourth quarter when George hit Rivas for a second TD score from 32 yards out. The Bobcats closed out the scoring with 1:08 left when George hit Da’Marcus Griggs for a 17-yard pass to make the final score 28-7.
