Former C.H.S. Standout Host Basketball Tournament

CROCKETT- Not too long ago the Melvis Wooten All-American basketball Tournament was held in Crockett, Texas. Members of the Dead End Barbershop Team were: Dre Murray, Brandon “Boo” Johnson, Untwaun Johnson and Graylon Crawford Jr.
Other members included: George Perry, Jeremy Carey, Brent Stephens and Anjuwan Smith, Darrell “Mookie” Smith, Terris Nicols and Elbert Wayne Johnson. Murray of Huntsville, said the tournament was nice and he came to “play a little basketball “after scoring 42 points in the Championship game.
He attends Galilee Church of God in Christ in Huntsville, where Noble Cooper is the pastor. Kobe Bryant and Dewayne Wade are his favorite NBA players. His goal is to play in the NBA.
“Keep God first,” Murray advised. “Pursue your dreams and stay focused.” Crawford Jr. is a super talented all-around athlete who played quarterback for Palestine’s West Wood High School last year and is currently playing football at Steven F. Austin University.
He attends Faith Tabernacle Church in Palestine which is pastored by Rev. Carlos Daniels. He said the coaches at SFA would like for him to play wide receiver and kick returner. He is a true freshman.
George “T Baby” Perry of Huntsville is a freshman basketball player at Dallas Brook Haven Junior College and is the son of Huntsville community leader Tilly Boo Perry. He is also the grandson of the late G.P. Perry.
Perry played some great basketball during the tournament; he attends Greater Zion Baptist Church in Huntsville where Rev. Micheal Davis is the pastor. “Keep your head up and keep reaching for the stars,” Perry said.
Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are his favorite player as well as team. Former Crockett High point guard, Brent Stephens of Bryan, played outstanding during the tournament. Brandon “Boo” Johnson of Crockett and of Huntsville, is a former multiple sports star at Crockett High and was of the captain of the winning team.
He played outstanding basketball through out the tournament. Untwaun Johnson of Crockett and Huntsville played phenomenal defense against stars on the other teams and was key part of our championship team. Johnson said the tournament was a great way of networking with other athletes and having a good time as well.
Andjuwaun Smith is the son of Crockett community leader Darrell Mookie Smith. Smith is a super gifted sophomore athlete at Crockett High, who played way beyond his years in the tournament.
Former CHS All-American basketball player, Melvis Wooten, whose son is Cartier Martin, played for the NBA team Charlotte Bobcats said the tournament was a good way to bring a lot of young people together in a safe, nonviolent event.
He went on to say to the tournament was a success and thanked his sponsors, players and the fans who attended.

Tracey Cooper, Nigel Mc-cullough, Maurice Hamilton, Broderick Creag, Myron Collins, Tony Chimney, P.C. Rhodes Jeffery Simmons, Derrick Grey, Orlando Johnson, J.T. Thompson, Corey Easterling, NaQuan Lee, Rickey Jones, Gene Bacon, Devin Wheeler, Lee Martinez, Chris Jones and Cedric Smith were some of the participating athletes.
Officials were Peter Hopkins, Ronnie Major, D. Nelums and the Ervin brothers, (Norris and Ray).Officer Sammy Wagner provided sercurity throughout the event.
Crockett Rapper Tre 57, performed at the after party, hosted by the Johnson Brothers at Harold Daniels’ place.
