SAN ANTONIO- The Freedom Foundation, a non-profit cultural and heritage organization, has taken on the task of renaming three East Side streets to memorialize the civil-rights movement and its legacy. Each street was chosen because it intersects with M.L. King Blvd., the route of the annual M.L. King march; and secondly, because there are but a few homeowners and business that will be impacted by the name changes.
Spriggsdale Street is to be renamed Martyrs Row, in honor of those men, women, and children that lost their life during the struggle for civil-rights in America. Pecan Valley Drive (from M.L.K. south to Rigsby) is to be renamed Barack Obama Drive, in honor of the 44th president of the United States and 2009 Nobel peace Prize winner.
Brooksdale Street is to be renamed Emancipation Pkwy, in honor of President Abraham Lincoln for abolishing slavery in America and for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for his role in abolishing the institutions of “Jim Crowism” in America.
A community poll is being distributed in the neighborhoods that will be impacted. ‘It is very important, that we as a community take these steps to further insure that future generations never forget the great sacrifices made in gaining our full citizenship-rights in America,” said Otis Thompson, founder.
