HOUSTON- The opportunity to vote should not be taken for granted, and neither should you. This year, we will elect our next mayor. Your decision to exercise your right to vote or forfeit it, and stay at home, may make or break Houston’s future.
According to one local political analyst, who based his prediction on past mayoral elections, less than one third of the more than one million eligible voters in Houston will exercise their right to vote on November 3rd (Election Day). Although I respect this local analyst (and simultaneously hope that he is wrong), at the end of the day, the power is in your hands.
My advice is simple: do not be misled, and reject misinformation. Time-out for not speaking up with your vote during an election, and then speaking out against the leadership once they’ve been elected. I urge you to vote and I am asking you to vote for me.
Over the last ten months, I have talked with thousands of Houstonians. People are angry and disappointed because they feel that city government has forgotten about them and their neighborhoods. People are frustrated over crime, the economy, lack of city services, transportation issues and increasing taxes.
The lack of confidence in public officials is real, and it saddens me. I know the many benefits of government and the positive impact that it can have. Nonetheless, I strongly believe that we each have the responsibility to get involved and take ownership of making our government work better for us.
Voting is the first step.
I am ready to be Houston’s next mayor. Aside from leading marches for equality during the 60’s and serving as Mickey Leland’s chief of staff, Houston and I have a unique history.
I have seen Houston through the eyes of a civil rights activist, steel worker, union member, small business owner, city attorney, husband and father. I have used my government, business and community experience to help create tens of thousands of jobs in. I am committed to bringing more jobs to Houston and making sure that the door of opportunity is open to all of us.
With a proven track record and bold vision to lead this city to the next level, I am the only candidate to be endorsed by the Houston Chronicle and Houston’s police and firefighters.
Join me in building a safer, stronger Houston. Houston’s future depends on your vote. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009. Early Voting is Oct. 19-30. For more information, visit: www.genelocke.com.
