St. Martin de Porres Society is UST’s African-American alumni society. The Society first met in June 2009 under the leadership of Larry Payne ’72, the Society’s inaugural president. The Society aims to support the recruitment, retention, development and graduation of UST’s current and prospective African-American students in the surrounding Houston community.

St. Martin de Porres Society is named in honor of one of the most beloved Catholic saints. Juan Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru in 1579. He is the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman and a black former slave of Panamanian birth. St. Martin de Porres is the patron saint for African-Americans, social injustice and race relations. His feast is Nov. 3.
