HOUSTON- Sixteen HISD seniors were named as semifinalists in the 2010 National Achievement Scholarship Program today. The 16 HISD students are among more than 1,600 African-American high school seniors who have been designated semifinalists in the 46th annual Achievement Scholarship® competition announced today by the National Achievement Scholarship Program. These students now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 800 scholarships worth more than $2.6 million.
Four semifinalists are seniors at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). Those students are: Allynn L. Delaney, Leslie C. Thibodeaux, Katherine N. Thomas, and Phillip E. Young. “Our four semifinalists from The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts certainly make us proud,” said Dr. Scott Allen, principal at HSPVA. “Their achievement reflects HSPVA’s commitment to excellence in academics as well as the arts. Our faculty and staff congratulate these outstanding young people and wish them only the best as they move to the next level of competition.”
Bellaire High School has four semifinalists: Christina Griffin, Anthony A. Landry, Ngozi L. Lawanson, and Alithea R. McFarlane. DeBakey High School also has four semifinalists. Those students are: Sierra D. Clark, Chibuzo K. Onwuzuruike, Jennifer Onyi Oradiegwu, and Olumayowa A. Willoughby. Lamar High School has two semifinalists: Lehlohonolo Mosola and Sesenu Y. Westside High School senior Nicque M. Robinson and Carnegie Vanguard High School senior Joshua U. Echebiri are also semifinalists. Approximately 1,300 semifinalists are expected to fulfill additional requirements and advance to the finalist level in the 2010 program. All scholarship winners will be selected from the finalist group on the basis of their abilities, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
More than 160,000 high school juniors from across the country were considered in the 2010 National Achievement Scholarship Program when they took the 2008 PSAT.
