HOUSTON- In 2006, St. James’ Boy Scout Troop 212 was struggling to survive. It was a dying troop with a long, rich history. Lionel Jellins took over the troop in late 2006 as part of his mission to provide boys in the inner city with the full scouting experience—leadership development, overnight camping, scout summer camps, and more.
One of the troop’s first activities was to serve holiday meals to the homeless in Third Ward. Now, three years later, Scoutmaster Jellins is preparing for his first Eagle Scout, his son, Mathew. Mathew raised nearly $1,350 to create 145 Emergency Preparedness Kits. The kits will be distributed for the homeless at two places - St. James Episcopal Church and Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mathew received contributions from members of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sam’s Club, Academy and H-E-B and other individuals who believed in the importance of his project. Mathew first distributed the EPKs at Trinity Lutheran Church. On Sunday, Oct. 25, the troop will distribute the kits at St. James Episcopal Church, 3129 Southmore Blvd., at the 3 p.m. Jubilee Homeless Service/Dinner. For more information, contact Scoutmaster Jellins at (713)269-1205.
