Rev. Dr. Edwin A. Davis receives a Proclamation from Councilmembers Ronald Green and Jarvis Johnson. HOUSTON- Galilee Missionary Baptist Church celebrated its 96th Church anniversary under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Edwin A. Davis. The Galilee Missionary Baptist Church was organized June 18, 1913 by the late Rev. D. Hartman with only a few members. Pastor W.M. Parker moved the church to a small building on Cohn Street.
Under the leadership of Pastor Parker, the church moved to its present site at 6616 D.S. Bailey Lane. Galilee worshiped in a small church until 1918, when Rev. W.H. Sanders was called to pastor and served two years before being replaced in 1920 by Rev. W. A. Haynes who served only a year. In 1921, Rev. J.C. Smith was called as pastor and he served for 25 years.
In 1947, Rev. D.S. Bailey, a great preacher, was called and under his leadership Galilee continued to grow. Due to fire damage the church was rebuilt in 1948 with the guidance of Pastor Bailey. In March 1977, God called Bailey to eternal rest.
In October 1977, Rev. E. J. Booker was called as pastor. Booker served until August, 1987. In December 1987, the church called Rev. Dr. Edwin A. Davis to serve as pastor. Under his leadership over 2500 new members have been added to the church family, a new educational building and a new church edifice were built. Also, the church has been designated as a historical site.
The Rev. Herbert Stroman, pastor of Christian Hope Missionary Baptist Church was the Anniversary speaker, State Representative Sylvester Turner was theme speaker, and other special guests were in attendance.
