North Forest Independent School Districts welcomes Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng as State of District Guest Speaker

Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng HOUSTON- Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, educator, co-founder of Our Public School and sister of President Barack Obama, will serve as North Forest ISD’s guest speaker at the 2009 NFISD State of the District Luncheon. The luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2009, at the Sheraton North Houston Hotel, 15700 John F. Kennedy Blvd. The State of the District Luncheon will highlight District accomplishments and plants the seed for the North Forest Education Foundation.
“During the past year, many noteworthy events have taken place in North Forest ISD—from the start of our all-day Pre-K and Urban Teacher Residency program to having four TEA-“Recognized” campuses to the completion and initial stages of implementing our strategic plan,” said NFISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Adrain Johnson. “North Forest ISD is moving and growing. We are anxious to share the details, and we are incredibly excited to have Dr. Soetoro-Ng join us as our guest speaker.”
Soetoro-Ng has a rich background in global and urban education. She earned a master’s degree in secondary education from NYU and a doctorate in international comparative education from the University of Hawaii. She is also writing an ethnography on peace studies to be used in classrooms, has two children’s books coming out in the Spring of 2010, and is writing a book for teens. Ticket are $40 per person.
