Reseeding Our Neighborhoods

If you've ever been to a pretty good size farm, you probably were surprised to see the acres and acres of food. You probably thought about what the farmer was going to do with all of that food. To answer your question, just go to your local supermarket or look in your freezer. All of the food that you eat comes from someone's farm.
Now let's look at this same concept and analogy when it comes to our communities. Our communities are like the large farms inside of our cities. Our children are the seedlings that are planted and raised for useful purposes. Our parents and caregivers are the farmers, who are given the task of planting and nurturing the crops of our communities. Most large farmers have farm hands to help with the multiple tasks that take place on a farm on a daily basis.
We have young men and young ladies who need help with making positive and productive decisions. We also need to help our parents in the process of teaching and reteaching our young people and getting them back on track toward successful behaviors and attitudes.

Who's WILLing to Overcome?

I'm still impressed when I watch how President Obama navigates the alligators, water mines, and torrential waves of America's political and social waters. As a man of color, I've seen countless examples of African American men, who have caved in to the pressures of being Black in America. Black in America is a challenge, whether we're willing to own up to the facts or not. But we now have an opportunity to really see a Black man in a role never seen or imaged by, not only Blacks, but others in America as well. This era is truly uncharted waters for all of us. Our president continues to defy the odds and nay-sayers by fighting for and showing genuine compassion for what he believes. I feel that he genuinely cares about this country and everyone in it. He is a living example for all people, but especially for African American men. He's demonstrating to us how we must aggressively and intellectually strive for what we believe in. We should rise above the negative stereotypes and social barriers and be positive and productive men. We should become more supportive of our families and our communities. We must develop a "will" and an attitude of becoming "Overcomers". We can overcome the negative perceptions and beliefs. We can become more positive and productive in greater numbers. We have a living example of the fulfillment of our hopes. Now we must become more hopeful and determine.

There are countless incidents of late, where these right-wing hecklers and protesters have showed up at meetings sponsored by congressional members. Most of the meeting have focused on the President's healthcare reform iniative. These hecklers and protesters are partially being motivated by a lot of the "lies" and "distorted truths" that are being broadcasted over the airways by conservative talk-radio personalities. This is America, all individuals have the freedom of speech, but these type of individuals want to use this freedom to be disruptive and disorderly. Regardless of their efforts, the "Truth" always prevails. The "Truth" is bigger than any one individual or group. As much as I want to have empathy for these individuals who want to be disruptive, it's hard to as long as they want to deny the Truth.

Stereotyping v Profiling

In light of the incident with Professor Gates and Officer Crowley in Massachusetts, there is this renewed dialogue concerning racial profiling. Just like racial profiling is damaging lives, there's another corrosive activity going on I call Stereotypical labeling. Stereotypical labeling is what too many people do on a daily basis, sometimes unaware. We stereotype individuals for our own reason and treated them or interact or react to them unfairly. We do it with our children, our mates, our coworkers, and so on. Many times we do it just out of habit or routine. We must be careful about the way that we view and treat other people, especially if the treatment is unwarranted. You never know who you might need.

If you've ever been around serious risk-takers, you've probably hear about the gambling game, Russian Roulette. With one bullet and one spin of the chamber, one is willing to bet on living or dying. We face a similar predicament on the roadways of Harris County on a daily basis with the increase in DWI drivers and TWD drivers. The DWI drivers are often repeat offenders. These drivers continuosly consume excessive amounts of alcohol and decide to get behind the wheel. TWD drivers are the increasingly large number of young drivers, who choose to drive and text on the phone at the same time. Because of both types of drivers many innocent individuals of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds are injured or killed. There must be more punitive means to hold these reckless renegades accountable for their actions. I love my family and friends, and would not like to lose not one of them to the reckless actions of one of these impaired drivers. This is a huge public safety issue that must be addressed.

In times such as the ones that we live in, it's refreshing to have true role models that we can relate to and admire. In my opinion President Obama and his family have given us renewed hope for not only our nation, but for our families as well. President Obama has done an awesome job of countering the critics. He is in an unprecedented position in America's history, and he's navigating the criticism and analysts with charisma, strength and versatility. We all can learn and benefit from his leadership style and abilities. We can learn how to balance what others think about what you're doing and maintaining focus on what needs to be done.
