C. RAY NAGIN, the much maligned and media demonized mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana miraculously rallied-- his "Soul brothers and sisters" that were scattered throughout the land of the free--to get
re-elected as "Chocolate City's" leader.

Can New Orleans’s "Soul" be revived?

"One of the most reasonable explanations for the spiritual symmetry between West Africa and the city of New Orleans at that time was the fact that it was a Catholic colony. Catholicism’s acceptance of a variety of saints and spirits was a major factor in the religion’s ability to both embrace, and assimilate, African spirituality. According to Bruce Raeburn, the curator of the Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University, ‘There is a greater ease that is made possible between African religions and Catholicism. The iconography of the Catholic faith is not stark, but rather, it’s loud and in its own way colorful. It lends itself to the kinds of additions that we find in African spirituality.’

Congratulations Mildred Herbert!

The Southwestern Professional Institute (SPI) held its Spring 2006 graduation ceremony, May 25th, at The United Way Building, 50 Waugh Drive, Houston, Texas. "SPI was founded in 1977 by Two University of Houston Law Professors who saw a need for a Paralegal School of the highest quality." "In 2202 SPI founded The Medical Assistant Training Program and The Pharmacy Technology Program in 2004."

Erma Delaney LeRoy was the strong, good Black woman behind her man, who fought the good fight against racism and inequality in the land of the free. In fact, there're some history conscious, Afrocentric people who wouldn’t hesitate to say that she did more to inspire the legendary freedom fighter, Moses LeRoy, than Coretta Scott King did to support Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s quest for civil rights. Thus, it was somewhat disheartening that so few organizations and/or supposedly Black and proud community leaders bothered to pay their respects and express their love and gratitude for Mrs. LeRoy, whose long and productive life was celebrated on July 19, 2006 at New Guide MBC, 3521 Dennis, with Rev. J. P. Hubbard officiating.

Black Child Abuse in Crowley Schools!!!

One of the best ways to describe incidents going on in the Crowley Independent School District against African American students is pure Black Child Abuse. Black child abuse by bad administrators who clearly ignored and neglected the unprofessional misconduct of teachers and principals in the system. Black child abuse by ignorant school board members who turned their heads and pretended that none of the incidents involving Black children took place. Black child abuse because African-American children are being terrorized by a "cracker" school system. The idea is simply preposterous!!!

East Texas News
I often hear bigots and racists saying "if you don’t like what’s going on in America, then just leave". As an African American, there are two things about that comment that have always bothered me—the people who were saying it and the absolute racist arrogant tone they were saying it with! My answer to that comment is the answer every true freedom fighter will have, "We don’t like what’s going on here, we’re not leaving and we are going to change this country".

Judge Sets Bond For Miller-El;
Denies Freedom

For months, Thomas Miller El endured difficult conditions in a Dallas jail hoping for the day the judge would set his bond allowing him a chance to walk out and spend his first day of freedom after 23 years behind bars. That hope evaporated quickly after a Dallas Criminal District Court Judge Manny Alvarez set a $750,000 bond on Aug. 3 and then told Miller-El that he would not allow him to be released, even if that bond was paid, according to court sources.

Slavery San Antonio Style

In San Antonio, African American slaves were sold twice a week at the auction houses of such well known names as Henry Burns, John M. Carolan, Charles F. King, George Collamer, WD. Greenwood and Company, J. N. Henriques, E. J. McLane, and Francis Giraud. Reportedly, in the 1800s, the first slave in San Antonio was William Baylor, though this appears untrue because of the Spanish slave system that existed with the arrival of the Canary Islanders in the 1700s, and the Spanish slave system that existed in Mexico in the 1500s. There were many slaves in San Antonio long before the 1800s and free blacks as well.

PUBLISHER’S ANALYSIS
by Roy Douglas Malonson

Are the "zero tolerance" Dems sending
Black America a subliminal message?

Although I’ve always considered myself political astute enough to vote for a person rather than a party, I realize that my voting pattern could easily be misconstrued to label me a Democrat. But nothing could be further from the truth. I only support people who I respect, or trust to do the right thing by my people. But I "ain't" married to them. Truth is, as an entrepreneur and founder of the Acre Homes Citizen Chamber of Commerce (a non-partisan organization that has evolved into African American Chamber of Commerce-Greater Houston), my politics must be as objective as African American News & Issues’ uncompromised Black perspective’s editorial policy. Consequently, most politicians representing "US" are Democrats. And that’s why message that they’re sending "US" disturbs me.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN NEWS & ISSUES

TwiliteZone.com—Mayhap you remember when a brash young fellow, named Kenneth Eakins, heard other kids singing on Rev. Lisa Berry Dockery’s Saturday Morning Person-to-Person call-in talk show on KCOH (1430AM) radio and simply ambled in and informed her, "I can sing too." Hey, when a young warrior has that kind of nerve and verve, This Bud’s For You. Ergo, I called the station and left my phone number for young Eakins, who called me and the rest is history. I provided Ken with a forum to raise funds and even grudgingly donated a few dollars toward his quest to sing his way across Europe myself. To make a long story short, I’m as proud of him as his lovely mother, Paula Eakins, who works at TSU, insofar as since he walked into KCOH almost two years ago, he’s won all kinds of awards, became a world traveler, graduated with honors from HISD’s High School for The Performing Arts and even held local concerts in Houston. But, his sho' nuff coup is being accepted to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. "Take it to the house" Kenneth.
