PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH has cause to pause and ponder how History will remember his hawkish regime's blunders..

GOP’s History Repeats
Absolute power corrupts greedy politicians

“In the United States, the Whiskey Ring was a scandal, exposed in 1875, involving diversion of tax revenues in a conspiracy among government agents, politicians, whiskey distillers and distributors.  The Whiskey Ring began in St. Louis, but was also organized in Chicago, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, New Orleans, and Peoria.  Before they were caught, a group of mostly Republican politicians were able to siphon off millions of dollars in federal taxes on liquor; the scheme involved an extensive network of bribes involving tax collectors, storekeepers, and others.

“True Warriors Wear Scars”
Congresswoman McKinney Fights Good Fight for Black America

At the age of four, Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia Ann McKinney sat on her father’s shoulders as he protested and picketed in his police uniform at the Atlanta Police Department.

She watched him stand alone trying to change conditions in the police department where he was the first Black police officer.  During that time, Black police officers could not arrest whites even if they witnessed whites committing a crime.  Racism and Jim Crow segregation also forced Black officers out of police locker rooms and into Black YMCA down the street to shower and change clothes before and after shifts.

BERTHA MAE EAST will always be remembered for her  quick wit, sense of humor and humility that she demonstrated throughout a long, delightful, yet very productive life that was celebrated on August 13, 2005 at Ross Mortuary Chapel, 3618 Lyons Ave., with Bishop Cherry officiating. The eulogy was a gospel message that was rendered by Rev. H. Daniel and active pallbearers were Robert Bell, T. C. Duncan, Anthony Freeman, William Benjamin, Joshua Booth, Lloyd Benjamin and Joseph Green.  Family and friends were honorary pallbearers for Bertha Mae, who was  born May 26, 1921, to the late Shield Rogers and Fannie Smith in Bastrop, Texas

At the Pinnacle of Power

“Building Bridges Most Important Priority of State’s Most Powerful Black Leader”

He is considered one of the 25 most powerful people in Texas politics and has been  known as one of the “Ten Best Legislators in Texas”.

Now, State Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, could be on the cusp of becoming one of the most influential and powerful African American leaders in modern Texas history.

West was chosen by his fellow state senators to serve as President Pro Tempore of the Texas Senate, making him second in the line of succession to be Governor of Texas.

East Texas News

As baseball superstar Barry Bonds closes in on Babe Ruth’s homerun record, white racism again raises its ugly head in defiance, from death threats to hate mail and hate books and hating fans along with a biased national media, which has never liked a strong Black man.   Barry Bonds gets to experience America’s wrath on a daily basis in much the same way his predecessors—Jack Johnson, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Muhammad Ali and other Black athletes did.

Tackling Tough Youth Issues

The PABA Living Endowment Plan, an arm of the Progressive Amateur Boxing Association and several of Houston's top gospel performing and recording artists, put their love and appreciation for Sister Pauline McNeal, KCOH Radio's "Darling of the Air", recently at the PABA 3212 Dowling Street.

South Dallas Community Gathering Stirs Traditional Memories of the Way it Was

The Minister Quanell X was nothing short of outraged while addressing a press conference held on March 29th, in Houston, Texas, at the Greenway Plaza complex. The Minister told the Houston press corps of a chilling experience while riding with his children, son Khalid, and daughter, Lauren. It appears that the well-known and articulate Minister was driving his daughter and son on a family outing while listening to the radio station 97.9, The Box.

PUBLISHER’S ANALYSIS
by Roy Douglas Malonson

When PAC money talks, poor Black politicians must walk

As I analyzed the mainstream media (e.g, USA Today and the online newspapers), Kristen Mack’s  post run-off election article (“Borris Miles’ victory re-flects a new generation of black elected officials”), that appeared in the  April 13, 2006 edition of the Houston Chronicle caught my attention. It did so, because it’s exactly what African-AmericanNews &Issues’ writers/reporters/co-lumnists constantly allude to when we profess to report all news without fear of favorite from an uncompromised Black perspective.  It further explains why doing so automatically makes us a uniquely different kind of newspaper, that’s dedicated to truly making a difference in the “lockstep,” politically correct, brain numbing society.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN NEWS & ISSUES

LostInSpace—I was very im-pressed by the humble, but very efficient response of  Angelett Whitfield, the proud mother of Octavia Pugh, who is determined to see her daughter wear the Miss Texas Teen (girls from 13-15)  crown.  Octavia, a 7th grader at Klein Forest Intermediate School, who was 2nd runner-up last year, says she plans to knock the judges off their feet (with her charm and dance routines), when the event is held in Houston, Texas on June 25 & 26, 2006 at Wyndham Greenspoint.  Octavia, who loves sports, church and learning about her planet’s environment, is sponsored by her doting mom, her Uncle Tony and her gym teachers…. Albeit, Octavia is a real cutey, but she wouldn’t have a chance against a beautiful 11-year-old Dallas, Texas lass that’s dear to me.  I speak of Altonette Johnson, who just happens to be the daughter of my cousins, Alvin and Rene Johnson and the beloved granddaughter of my late Aunt Adeline Johnson.
