SHEILA JACKSON LEE, the 18th Congressional District’s Representative , the ranking member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, is fighting for a kinder, gentler policy.

Alien Invasion or Evasion?

“As the late Westbrook Pegler wrote in a similar situation many years ago, ‘I have come up with a nugget of such size and purity that it can only be discussed in editorial terms of 'My God, can such things be?' I am referring to America's huge problem with illegal immigration. According to the last U.S. Census, there are more than 7 million illegal immigrants in this country (with Mexicans accounting for two-thirds of that number), with almost 300,000 more pouring over the border each year.

Charles Toliver’s “Bon Voyage”
Retirement Party

“He who gets wisdom loves his own soul. He who keeps understanding will find good.” Charles (Mr.T) Toliver, Assistant Superintendent Metro Transit Co., was honored, with a “Bon Voyage” Retirement Party, hosted by his fellow employers, at the M.U.D. Building, 9431 Rio Grande at West Road, Houston, Texas. Charles grew up in The Fifth Ward section of Houston, attending, Crawford Elementary and E.O. Smith Jr. High School. While attending E.O. Smith “Tolly T” found out he had a very special gift”and that “gift” was being a wide receiver on the football team.

CHARLIE PORTER, SR. was one of the many true cowboys who contributed to the Lone Star State’s “Longhorn” legend. He lived in several places in the Texas Gulf Coast area, working on many ranches "punching cattle" as he called it. He was a cowboy at heart. And that’s how he was remembered during the celebration of his long and exciting life on June 7, 2005 at Mt. Horeb MBC, 118 W. Gray, with Rev. Samuel H. Smith, Sr. officiating. Active pallbearers were Lourie Pennie, Marcus Ingram, James Mitchell, Leon Anderson and Bryan Ingram. Joseph Narcisse, Gloria Ferguson, Shirley Ingram, Hazel Cade and the Pennie family were honorary pallbearers for Charlie, who was born on October 22, 1917 to Joseph J. Porter and Gertrude Truby in Arcola, Texas (FYI: Arcola is at the junction of Farm Road 521 and State Highway 6.

Paris News insults
Black reader’s intelligence
“If there is one thing my daddy taught me, it is that racism doesn’t know color. He understood that it is the evil that lurks in a person’s heart, not the color of one’s skin that leads to racism. Color didn’t matter to Daddy. Paris schools, like many other community organizations, have some work to do to address some very real racial equality issues, but what African-AmericanNews&Issues published was a racist rant about a recent juvenile case involving a black teen and a white teacher’s aide at Paris High School.

East Texas News
With the war raging in Iraq and America fighting a second war in Afghanistan, one would think the treatment of Black people in America would be better, seeing how America might need them for war. Putting wishful thinking aside, from a historical perspective, working hard for white folks and fighting hard to win “their wars” has never won Black people a great deal of respect from main stream America.

Mrs. Pauline

The PABA Living Endowment Plan, an arm of the Progressive Amateur Boxing Association and several of Houston's top gospel performing and recording artists, put their love and appreciation for Sister Pauline McNeal, KCOH Radio's "Darling of the Air", recently at the PABA 3212 Dowling Street.

Quanell X Address Issues
about Public Airways

The Minister Quanell X was nothing short of outraged while addressing a press conference held on March 29th, in Houston, Texas, at the Greenway Plaza complex. The Minister told the Houston press corps of a chilling experience while riding with his children, son Khalid, and daughter, Lauren. It appears that the well-known and articulate Minister was driving his daughter and son on a family outing while listening to the radio station 97.9, The Box.

Lewis serves “Lunch Bunch” food for thought with meat on the bone

David Lewis spoke softly at the African American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston’s monthly (every first Thursday), April 6, 2006 Business Networking Luncheon @ the Beulah Ann Shepard Building, 6112 Whea-ley Street. But, the extensive information that he enlighten the “Lunch Bunch” with gave them a great deal to digest. Like the old folks use to say, there was “a lot of meat on the bone,” that Lewis (Community Affairs Officer for the U. S. Office of Comptroller and Currency’s Southern District) served a Lunch Bunch that’s always hungry for information about community development, entrepreneurial opportunities and economic empowerment.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN NEWS & ISSUES

TwiliteZone.com—You talk about a blast from the past. I definitely got one when my pal Bobby Hayes left a phone message (informing me that Nathaniel “Hoss” Robertson, whose backyard in Garden City Park bumped mine, and his BTW teammate in 1954-55) was being funeralized on April 8, 2006 at Paradise Funeral Home’s Chapel, 10401 W. Montgomery. Actually, I thought old “Hoss,” who moved to California had passed years ago. Nevertheless, I had 20 minutes to dress and arrive in time to participate in the order of service along with Bro. and Sis. Jefferson, his teammates Rev. James “Blue” Phillips and Hayes, who is still recovering from a heart and cancerous kidney operation himself. Rev. Calvin O. Randle, Pastor of Mt. Pleasant BC, eulogized Robertson who was born June 10, 1935 to Leroy and Joyce Robertson (She later married Henry Stephens who helped raised her four children), in Houston, Texas.
