Turning Over
Irving’s Dirty Little Secret |
|
For years, the city of Irving, Texas has been in the shadow of
Dallas.
In that shadow is a dirty little secret that holds Blacks, Hispanics and
women in business back from getting a fair share of the economic pie.

MATTIE MARIE FRANKLIN MARSHALL epitomizes the dedicated young, African
Americans who became great educators, although they were only the third
generation that was born free. Thus, in Black History Month 2006
African- AmericanNews&Issues is proud to salute her at the behest of
Fiesta’s Black History 24-7-365, as a Black History maker who lived to
see her great-great-great-grandchildren enjoy some of the fruits of her
contributions.

Does George W. Bush Care
About Black People?
|
|
Following the government’s slow response to the desperation of
many African Americans during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina’s
destruction, hip-hop icon Kanye West became the spokesperson for all
African Americans in this great nation. When West stated that, “George
Bush does not care about Black people,” the community labeled him as a
hero for speaking the truth, and simply stating what many felt in their
hearts, but did not have the platform to do.

I heard national civil rights freedom fighter Quanell X say in a recent
speech in Texas City, Texas, that the state of Texas and the United
States were profiting financially from prisons. He also spoke of how the
Prison Industrial Complexes in America were brought in by design and
about the lack of planning and provision for “real” funding for
education and other programs that keep people out of prisons.

Black
leaders must know history
to know their peoples’ progress |
|
As much as African
Americans talk about knowing our history, it’s amazing how few
people (Black, White or “Others”) know what history is. They’re
wont to see history as the distant past, or whatever the mass
media propagates as historic events. Consequently, you hear
remarks like, “Why is Black History Month the shortest month of
the year?” or, “We should celebrate Black History every day of
the year.” I agree.

TwiliteZone.com—I have to applaud my old
pal Ovide Duncantell, who is still as sharp as he was when he
attended TSU’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law, insofar as he
quickly filed for next year’s MLK Parade permit while the city
was still cleaning up the mess Black folks made in downtown
Houston. City Councilman and sure to be 2007 mayoralty hopeful,
Michael Berry, who had a part in orchestrating an uneasy peace
between Ovide and Charles Stamps was quoted as saying, “You
can’t mandate niceness, but you can mandate a process.” That’s
for sure. Yet, here’s some food for thought: if the city issued
only one permit for a parade (on a first come, first served
basis, as it should), we, indeed, would have a “nice” MLK Day
next year.
