4th of July is a lie

By Roy Douglas Malonson

An editorial that we published shortly after 2005 America celebrated New Year’s Day asked a question that we think should be asked constantly by parents of good consciences who proudly pledge alliance to the United States of America. We asked, with just a little tongue-in-cheek, “What’s Wrong With You People?” It quicky became obvious that the “You People” we were talking to was a play on a gaffe that the presidential hopeful Ross Perot was alluding made when he spoke to the NAACP in 1992. Remember Perot? You should, because his quest for a third political party shook up the world. Have you so soon forgotten? Especially, since the late Elizabeth “Liz” Spates stirred a whole lot of controversy in the ‘hood when she joined Perot’s United We Stand” party and ran his Houston office. On the other hand, we have such short attention spans, today, until it’s a safe bet that you don’t have the slightest idea where we’re coming. Therefore African-American News & Issues will simply do as we always do with our uniquely innovative (FYI) feature and explain that on July 11, 1992, Perot, who had yet to declare his bid for the presidency, was addressing the NAACP convention in Nashville, Tennessee, startled and offended his listeners by referring to the predominantly Black audience as "you people." Naturally he was alluding to Black people, but we see no reason why we can’t put a Black perspective spin on Perot’s misstatement.
And since we should be free to tell the truth on Independence Day, if nothing else... something is seriously wrong with “You People” if you keep celebrating a lie when you know it’s a lie.
We Must Understand, a lie is only necessary when there’s something to gain, or cover up. Therefore it’s apropos on-- July 4, 2005-- to ask mainstream America what’s wrong with “You People,” who keep lying to your children about what really went down on July 4, 1776 Philadelphia? Incidentally, the same goes for African Ame-ricans depend on lying mainstream media for your major source of information. So, let’s examine a few lies: According to Ken Davis (author of the best seller book “Don’t Know Much About History”), nothing of importance really happened on July 4, 1776. For real, since the Declaration of Independence had been signed on July 2, 1776, the party was over and everybody was sleeping off a hangover. Seriously, history records that John Adams, who many believed would be the first America president, wanted the new Republic to elebrate the 2nd of July, not the 4th. The Resolution for In-dependence was created by the Continental Congress was actually passed and voted on, on July 2 and Adams was certain that this date would be celebrated forever as the date of the nation's birth. In addition, he thought there would be fireworks and bells ringing for the rest of history on this date. George Washington “never told a lie” aside, the reason his name isn’t on the original Declaration of Independence is because he wasn't around for the signing. In fact, most of the men who signed, signed about a month later in August. So, this notion that they're all standing around just waiting to sign on the 4th of July is a bit of a small misconception. However, from a Black perspective, we’re more interested in the myth surrounding the Liberty Bell. It was actually rung on July 1776 to announce the signing of the Declaration, but the famous crack that we all see in it didn't happen until 1835. And it was actually not even called the Liberty Bell until 1839 when the Americans were really starting to fight over abolition and ending slavery. Even so, you don’t have to take our word for it, even if you have learned to not make yourself look dumb by questioning African-American News & Issues’ well-researched information.
We Must Understand, when a nation is built on persisting lies, it poisons the souls of its malleable minded young people that want to believe, with all of their hearts, that the country that they’re living in-- and dying for--is, indeed, the greatest nation in the history of the civilized world. So why haven’t the history books been changed to reflect the truth about America’s history. Moreover, why were erroneous history books (filled with half truths, myths and whitewashed versions of settling the land of the free and slavery) allowed in the nation’s classrooms in the first place? What’s wrong with “You People?” We’re sure that a consensus “You People” have no intentions of answering that question. Truth is, ‘You People” really can’t handle the truth. Consequently, “You People” have already dismissed our editorial as just another racist rant. And with your head stuck in the intellectual sand, you won’t have a problem with proudly celebrating the Fourth of July as this great nation’s day of independence, which guarantees ALL citizens the constitutional right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Although it’s a lie.
