D.C. Talks
Connecting the lynching
and suffering of thousands of African Americans with the cross of Jesus
Christ is a key element in energizing the Black church and uniting the
religious community in America, according to Black theological expert
Dr. James Cone.
“Unless the cross and lynching tree are correctly understood, there can
be no genuine understanding of Christian identity in America and can be
no healing of the racial divide in churches and seminaries and societies
as a whole,” the influential African American theologian said. “There is
hope only if America has the courage to confront its great sin and the
ongoing legacy of white supremacy with complete redemption and
reparations.” |

War Protests Increase amidst Concerns over the Domestic Casualties of War in Iraq
African American and
Hispanic war protesters want their loved ones brought back home from
Iraq and Afghanistan contending they are tired of the poor and
minorities being used by the wealthy as economic pawns in a very deadly
game.
“This is a class war where the majority of people fighting the war are
country whites and urban minorities, including African Americans,
Hispanics and Latinos,” said activist and writer Richard J. Gonzales.
“The upper two-thirds of the economic classes are no shows for this war.
It is time to ask Mr. Bush if he is so gung ho about the war on
terrorism, then let him offer his daughters for service (in the armed
forces) and also ask other congressmen and those making $200,000 a year
why their sons and daughters are not part of this war if they love this
country so much.” |
