Big H’s History “blackens” Brown |
|
As Black History Month ends, I can’t help but be conscious of how history is made. Ideally news and events are recorded in the media and stored in the libraries throughout the nation, where it will be available for future generations to research. With that process in mind, I couldn’t help but conclude that Houston, Texas’ mainstream media has constantly “blacken” Dr. Lee P. Brown’s history making tenure as the first Black mayor of the nation’s fourth largest city.

30th Annual Texas state Lectureship
The 30th Annual Texas
State Lectureship was sponsored by The Houston Area Churches of Christ
and hosted by the Fifth Ward Church of Christ, 4308 Stonewall Street
(I-10 @ Waco Street), Houston, Texas. The first “TSL’ was hosted
by the Marsalis Avenue and The Cedar Crest Church of Christ in Dallas,
Texas, (1976) with (The Late) Dr. Grover C. Washington, Chairperson. We
will always be indebted to the C.O.C in The Dallas Metropolis for its
genesis. The “Theme” of this year’s lectureship was “What The Bible
Teaches concerning Issues Impacting The Lord’s Church” and “Endeavoring
to Keep The Unity”. |

African-American Community Mourns Loss of Waco Mayor; Prepares To Continue Struggle
and Build on Her Legacy
African-American News and
Issues As the African-Americans in Waco mourn the sudden death of
popular Mayor Mae J. Jackson, community leaders hope to learn from and
build on her legacy. “This is not the time to sit back and lay down the
wand,” said McLennon County Commissioner Lester Gibson. “We must grieve,
but we must be ready to step up, push forward, continue the struggle and
not let it die.” Jackson, 63, died Feb. 11 at a Waco Hospital. She was
the first African American woman elected to serve as mayor of the city.

Cheating Allegations Acres Home Schools
The Dallas Morning News
recently published an article in which former employees of HISD’s Acres
Homes Coalition for School Improvement alleged cheating occurred at
three Acres Homes elementary schools. Data obtained by the Coalition for
School Improvement refutes the claims made by the former employees and
makes their motive in making the accusations highly suspect. |
