Houston’s City Controller Annise Parker’s straight up, easy manner of speaking definitely moved her up a couple of places on the “Lunch Bunch’s” short list of favorite speakers, when she addressed the Acres Home Citizens Chamber of Commerce during their Feb. 3, 2005 monthly (each first Thursday) network/meeting at the Acres Home Center for Business & Economic Development’s Beulah Ann Shepard Building, 6112 Wheatley Street.

I really and truly believe that giving Black Americans reparations for past slavery would not only be the right thing to do, but it would set America on a new course of financial and racial harmony. Just think about it, we (Black Folks) could really move forward in this society with reparations in the form of “cold cash money”. Once we got reparations there would be no need to blame anyone for our short comings if we fall back into poverty. Before I go any further with this discussion, I don’t want to infuriate readers who don’t agree with me on this one, I just have to tell it like it is!

James and Mildred Herbert Jumped The Broom

Saturday evening James Herbert and Mildred Brown celebrated their marriage with a lavish reception at the Victual Restaurant Lyons, Avenue and Pannell Street (5th Ward) Houston, Texas.
Surrounded by family, friends, ex co-workers and church members, the happy couple danced to the music of Disc Jockey Carl Booker.

 

Shuntavia Dshontel Wimby Named Huston-Tillotson College’s Miss UNCF

(AUSTIN, Texas) — Shuntavia DéShontel Wimby has been named Huston-Tillotson College’s 2005 Miss United Negro College Fund (UNCF).  She represented the College at the Miss National UNCF Coronation in Orlando, Florida last week, and will be presented to the Austin community at a special coronation program as part of the homecoming basketball game halftime program on Saturday, February 19.
