It’s Left To Us
Beware Black Churches/Faith Based Initiatives

Beware of the Faith Based Initiatives of President George W. Bush. President Bush was just in Dallas speaking to the Knights of Columbus, the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organization, he stated that “government needs to stand on the side of faith-based groups, not against faith-based groups”. What he did not say----is the troubling aspect of this attempt by government to politicize churches by giving them government money. Many churches and groups will dampen their efforts to hold government accountable because of this money given under the guise of “what government can never do is put love in a person’s heart, or a sense of purpose in person’s life” stated the President, suggesting that government must rely on churches to do this!!
Hidden in this so called self help faith based financial assistance offered by the Bush administration is serious potential of many large Black churches to not address local and national political issues that directly affect their congregations.

I was disheartened by video at a local church that received millions of dollars to build a church school and gym. President Bush had made a visit to highlight his faith based programs, and what caused me great consternation—was this little Black girl, who was caught on the video smiling and singing “We love you President Bush”. I thought of the irony of this scene, this little Black girl not knowing how adverse President Bush’s programs and policies had been used to set back the quality of life for many Blacks in education, health, civil rights and his in-justice system.

Can we afford these faith based programs? Will these large churches with many ill informed members be led blindly by these church ministers who want larger churches and more federal dollars to operate, at whatever cost, including selling their politics.
Black churches must began to serve their congregation with political information that is not self-serving, but information that will energize them to work more for political relief needed in every aspect of our lives, whether it is health care, education or employment.
We must be aware that there can be serious pitfalls in accepting federal dollars or local funding from banks, if it causes our church leadership to look the other way because of faith based funding or the bank note. Will these churches feel obligated to vote for President Bush because of these funds? Will the church leadership stay silent when the President’s polices adversely affect his members or community?

It Is Left To Us— to not be enticed by these so called faith based Initiatives, because I feel the cost will be too great and we will not be able to afford them because it will take the fight out of most of these church members and church leaders who receive these funds
