High School Seniors
Experience College Life A Year Early at
The Jesse H. Jones School of Business Summer Scholars Program
Dozens of high school seniors will
experience college a year early through the Summer Scholars Program
established by the Jesse H. Jones School of Business at Texas Southern
University (TSU). The program was created to provide high school seniors
with the opportunity to prepare for college life, network with corporate
executives, meet other college bound students, and gain valuable experience
and pertinent skills while living on the TSU campus. The program runs
Sunday, July 11-Friday, July 23, 2004.
Scholarships were provided to all students to cover food, books and
supplies, housing, and travel expenses. The Program targets intellectually
gifted students, including low-income, underserved and minority students,
and is designed to increase awareness of careers in business through
interaction with professionals and an academic curriculum. Students will be
exposed to the dynamics of the college environment and the corporate
atmosphere through a 24-hour, two-week pre-college summer session. The goal
is to prepare students with the experiences and skills needed for a
successful college career.
The comprehensive pre-college curriculum includes classroom lectures and
assignments in each of the basic business disciplines of accounting,
entrepreneurship, finance, management, and marketing. Students will form
investment groups with allocated funds to make and track their investments.
Board meetings will be held daily by each investment team to review
performance and each weekend the portfolio will be re-balanced and
additional securities selected. Students will also participate in field
trips to corporations, financial institutions, government offices and
accounting firms to augment experiential programming and provide exposure to
the entrepreneurial mindset.
About the Jesse H. Jones School of Business is the fastest-growing school
