OPEN LETTER TO MAYOR “BULL” WHITE
&Your Negro/Black/African-American/
African In America Supporters and Advisors
Sir:
You have publicly described the issue of the reparations resolution at city
council as a “DISTRACTION”. Sir, You have offended in the most pernicious
way the memory of the millions of our Holy African Ancestors who died in
Africa, whose bones rest at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, who died in
the middle passage on slave ships, who on these shores worked from can’t see
in the morning to can’t see at night for centuries for no pay, the unknown
numbers of those raped, murdered, and dehumanized, the thousands lynched and
the millions of us who today suffer the vestiges of the white supremacist
foundation of this nation in the prison system, housing, job discrimination,
racial profiling, mis-education and inadequate health care.
Sir, As the elected leader of Houston, Texas you should be overjoyed at the
opportunity presented to you with this resolution to place your name on the
scroll of history before Houston, the nation, the world and God to say the
original crime of enslavement of African people was wrong, the vestiges live
with us today and the time for an open national discussion on these
fundamental issues has come.
Sir, May 10, 2004 represents approximately three months of non-response of
your office to our written communication regarding this matter. During this
time our monitoring of City Council proceedings reveal the passage of two
resolutions passing in close to unanimous fashion. One such resolution was
designed to “send a message” to a federal body. Ironically, you and other
city politicians have used the excuse that Houston City Council has no place
in taking positions on federal issues as a rationale for not supporting our
resolution.
The time has come for us to ask your Black advisors and supporters, those
who stood so publicly in support of your candidacy, those who stood/stand
overtly and covertly with you and those members of your administration,
“Will you stand boldly with our efforts? We suggest that you stand up with a
straight back and tell Mayor White he is wrong and must change his
dismissive and retrenched position on this fundamental issue, least you find
yourself on the wrong side of history and against your own people.”
