PRAIRIE VIEW FALLS SHORT IN SWAC TENNIS TITLE MATCH

The Prairie View A&M University men’s tennis team’s quest for their first Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship since 1970 came to an end with a 4-0 loss to Southern University in the finals of the 2004 SWAC tennis championships on Sunday at Westside Tennis Club.
The Jaguars took control of the match early by capturing the doubles point. Southern’s number one doubles team of Alex Hidalgo and David Ensignia defeated Prairie View’s Blessing Brunzawabaya and Kudzai Chiridza 8-2. The Jaguars clinched the point when the team of Michael Date and Christopher Williams defeated Prairie View’s Xavier Godoy and David Harrera 8-5. In singles, Southern wasted no time in clinching their third consecutive NCAA Tournament bid by winning the first three games. Southern’s Hidalgo defeated Godoy (7-6, 6-0) while Prairie View’s Amin Memon fell to Date (6-2, 6-2). The Jaguars clinched the match on Alejandro Galindo’s (6-2, 6-4) victory over Harrera. Even though the Panthers came up short in their quest for the SWAC title, head coach John
Cochran was pleased with his team’s effort. “It was tough losing the match but I am proud with the way we played,” he said. “One of our goals was to put Prairie View tennis on the map and we accomplished that this season. If we continue to work hard we should contend for the SWAC title this time next year.”
