Local Girl Scout Receives Girl
Scouting's Highest Honor
Girl Scout Jessica Jones has earned Girl
Scouting's highest achievement, the Gold Award. Girl Scouts who earn this
award have demonstrated leadership skills, career planning, community
involvement, and personal development. It takes two to three years of
intensive work to complete all the requirements for the award. Fewer than
one percent of girls who join Girl Scouts earn this recognition. A major
component of earning the Gold A ward is planning and completing a Gold A
ward Project that is a service to Girl Scouts and/or the community.
For her Gold Award Project, Jones held a church and community book drive to
help start the academic library at Dominion Academy, a charter school
created through the Community of Faith Church. The book drive not only
collected reading books, but also other references, such as encyclopedias,
dictionaries, and computer learning programs. This school was in need of
these resources in order to provide the students with more reading and
learning materials at their own reach and to give the students the resources
they need to efficiently complete homework assignments and school projects.
She collected more than 600 books and other reference materials, well over
her initial goal to collect 200 to 300 books. "From this project, I learned
how to become a better leader and to become more organized. Since this
project required a lot of my time, the skills that helped me along the way
besides leadership and organizational abilities were prioritizing,
dedication, and communication," said Jones "Jessica truly learned a lot from
carrying out her Gold Award Project. She not only learned the importance of
organization and responsibility, but also the act of giving.
Throughout her project, in spite of the challenges, Jessica never gave up
and remained determined and focused on her goal, which was to become a Gold
Award recipient. Jessica has realized the benefits of hard work and
determination, and she continues to strive in everything she does. We are
proud parents," said her parents Thomas and K'Netha Jones.
Jones is a senior a Lamar High School and plans to study engineering in
college.
Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's preeminent organization for girls,
with a membership of more than 3.5 million girls and adults. Today, as when
founded in 1912, GSUSA helps cultivate values, social conscience, and
self-esteem in young girls, while also teaching them critical life skills
that will enable them to succeed as adults.
In Girl Scouting--and its special girl-only environment--girls discover the
fun, friendship and power of girls together. Chartered by GSUSA to provide
Girl Scouting locally, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is one of the
largest Girl Scout councils in the country serving over 58,000 girl members
and 13,000 adults in 21 southeast Texas counties.
GSSJC Pluralism Statement Embracing and promoting pluralism is an integral
part of every activity and plan of Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, not
disconnected or separate projects. Only individuals willing to accept and be
educated about the basic tenet that Girl Scouting is for all girls may serve
in volunteer leadership or staff positions. GSSJC 8 Communications
