OPERATION SUNRISE FOR REPARATIONS

On Tuesday, April 20, 2004 members of the Local Action Committee for Reparations (LAC) focused there attention on city employees, council members and staff by staging a protest in the early morning hours near the entrance of the City Hall parking lot. The life sized depiction of a Black man being hung called “STRANGE FRUIT” appeared to startle many drivers as they reported for work.

The battle is over placing the “reparations study resolution” on the council agenda for a vote. This resolution supports Congressman John Conyers H.R. 40 Bill on slavery, it’s lingering effects and possible remedies including reparations. On last week the Houston Council passed a different resolution on another issue designed to “send a message” to a federal body. This action debunked excuses by politicians that the Houston City Council had no place in weighing in on federal issues. Eight council people can override the Mayor and place the item on the agenda.

LAC cadre protester Che Kimathi explained his experience “ I am happy to be up and out early this morning. As a young soldier I get high off working for my people”. Over the past month LAC members have raised the great and mighty demand for reparations a number of different times and different locations. We will keep the heat on, we have no other choice.
