Shape Center marks 35th
Anniversary Homecoming


S.H.A.P.E. Community Center plans a two-day Homecoming celebration for Friday, April 23, 2004 and Saturday, April 24, 2004, 3815 Live Oak at Alabama.

1969 S.H.A.P.E.(Self-Help for African People through Education) offered community) chiLdren free homework assistance and tutorial activity as its first real program. Today the program is referred to as the Family Strengthening and Empowerment Program ,EP), a program which began its focus on children, was broadened to include services for the whole family. Within its 35 years of service this has been the emphasis of L.A.P .E. Center, to improve the quality of life for community families, through direct action and provision of programs and services to meet real needs. Deloyd Parker, member and Executive Director of S.H.A.P.E. said; "Our motto is Strong Family: Strong ion. The quality of our community can be no stronger than the quality of the families : make up that community." Within its 35 year life span S.H.A.P.E. has tirelessly worked with individuals, families and organizations to improve the quality of life for all. though programs like family guidance and counseling; legal services; parenting support families; the Kazi Shule Alternative School for elementary school children; Forums,workshops, lectures and rallies to educate and inform the community in a wide range of event issues; Voter Registration, education, mobilization and transportation; the freedom Tour; Drug Treatment Referrals, and the Annual Pan-African Cultural Festival Kwanza Celebration; S.H.A.P.E. has established a reputation as an institution of all integrity and progressive community involvement. Positive impact of S.H.A.P.E Community Center in the life of the community could have been realized without numerous individuals, families, businesses and mizations who over 35 years have continued to selfishly offer their time and sources. On Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24, S.H.A.P.E will be celebrating 35 years of valuable service to the Houston and World community. The theme of this two celebration /fund-raiser is "Returning to S.H.A.P.E. Tomorrow. The fund raising goal 50,000.00. Corporations, organizations and individuals have been contacted, and have agreed to respond. If you are a friend of S.H.A.P.E. you are invited to return home to celebrate 35 years of helping others help themselves. Come share the fun and commit to meeting the fund-raising goal. The value of S.H.A.P.E. can be no greater than your contributions.
