Gamma Sigma Chapter
Status of Women Luncheon and Fashion
“Beautiful”, “Lovely” and “Fantastic” were just a few of the
compliments shared by the nearly four hundred attendees at the annual Gamma
Sigma Status of Women Luncheon and Fashion held at the Renaissance Houston
Hotel. This year’s event was sponsored by the Gamma Sigma Charitable and
Educational Foundation, our 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Each year, at the Status of Women Luncheon, Gamma Sigma awards scholarships
to graduating high school seniors and this year was one of the best with
nearly $5,000.00 being given to deserving students throughout the city of
Houston and its surrounding areas, special thanks to Mr. Daunishie Hall of
Fair Deal Auto Sales, who augmented his financial support by $1,500.00. In
addition to the monies, Black History Month was honored with reenactments of
some of the biggest moment of the Civil rights movement.
The theme for this year’s Luncheon was entitled “The Legacy…Pass It On” in
honor of all Mother/Daughter Sorority Legacies. To be selected for this
Legacy honoree list was the most sought after and talked about event in
Houston’s Greek Circles. All over the city of Houston, Gamma Sigma Chapter
Sorors were being stopped and asked about the requirements and if it was too
late to send in the application. With such an overwhelming outpouring of
interest it was decided to limit the number of honorees at twenty-two (22)
sets of Legacies. Each sorority of the Divine Nine was represented and Sigma
outnumbered them all three to one!!
Such a successful and elegant event could not have been pulled off without
the meticulous planning and execution of our Status of Woman Committee.
Special thanks to Committee members - Sorors Alice Jones; Rosie Anderson;
Brenda Johnson; Connie Trumble; Artie Mitchell; Dolly Spencer; Glenda
Clausell; Keeya Henderson; Nneka Beauford; Crystal Thomas; Helena Myatt and
the Gamma Sigma Rhoers, led by Rhoer President Katrina Glenn, who did a
fantastic job as hostesses.
In addition to many wonderful events taking place at the Status of Women
Luncheon (scholarship presentations; Black History re-enactment; fashion
show) there was the Project Reassurance presentation of baby and toddler
items made to W.G. Smiley Childhood Development Center. Thanks to Soror
Notrie Scott for taking charge of this endeavor. This marked the second
Project Reassurance presentation made by Gamma Sigma this year. The first
was a presentation to Waltrip High Schools’ Early Childhood Center, which
received clothing, toddler toys and car seats.
Thank you Soror Henry Etta Johnson-O’Neal, Region UCC; Soror Brenda Canty;
Soror Chantay Canty, Basileus Gamma Phi Sigma and Frater Clyde Lemon,
President of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. of Houston and member
of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. for supporting and celebrating with us
at this event.
Congratulations go out to Soror Jennifer Lee who was promoted to Accountant
II in the Provost Division at the University of Houston. Congratulations to
Soror Tanya Holmes who got engaged on Valentine’s Day to Christopher Aggison.
A Sigma Wedding is being planned for Spring 2005. Soror Holmes, who is
pursuing her Master’s degree, also received an academic scholarship from
Maxim Financial Group.
Congratulations are in order for Gamma Sigma Rhoer Ken'Tia Mouton who was
awarded a $1,500.00 scholarship at the annual Status of Women Luncheon.
Rhoer Mouton is also taking college courses while in her senior year of high
school. Congratulations to Gamma Sigma Rhoer President Katrina Glenn who
again made the Varsity Cheerleading squad at Lamar High School where as a
sophomore she is also President of the cheerleading squad!
April 28, 2004, marks the seventy-sixth (76th) anniversary of Gamma Sigma
Chapter!! Homage is due to the standard bearers, Chapter Founders Marie
Jefferson, Johnnie M. Johnson, Ola Mitchell, Marjorie Alexander, Johnnie Y.
Rice, and Catherine Roett. These six educators were interested in furthering
finer womanhood, scholarship, community service, and leadership and with the
management of Ola Mitchell, Gamma Sigma’s first chapter Basileus, the
foundation for success was laid to which hundreds of Sigma Sorors
seventy-six years later can claim as their local Sigma Legacy. The Legacy
includes such noteworthy items as hosting the Southwest Region’s first Boule
on December 27-29, 1938; being one of the largest chapters in the Sigma
Family; having Gamma Sigma’s own Gertrude Murchison as the first
Editor-in-Chief of The Aurora; undergrad chapter transfer rates of 80%; tens
of thousands of dollars in scholarship awards and grants; not to mention the
numerous local, state and national accolades and acknowledgements received
through the years from Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Mayors of the City of
Houston, Texas, Governors of the State of Texas, various schools and local
community agencies and leaders.
Gamma Sigma with 76 years of continuous community outreach will persist in
making important strides in delivering on our promise to uphold the ideals
and tenets of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. as we GO FORWARD and augment
our efforts for “GREATER SERVICE…GREATER PROGRESS”.
